Frozen toilet waste drops into family's bathroom

A chunk of frozen toilet waste from an airliner has damaged a bathroom in a
Long Island house after crashing through the roof.

Teacher Susan Seltzer, of North Massapequa, had left the house in New York
state to go shopping just before the waste crashed through her roof.

The New York Daily News says she found ice, about the size of a honeydew
melon, in the hallway when she returned.

Her husband Kenneth said the ball of ice punched a hole in the roof, damaged
joists in the attic and then holed the bathroom ceiling before bouncing 15
feet down the hall.

The family has a second bathroom which wasn't hit.

Mrs Seltzer said: "Aren't they supposed to dump this stuff over the ocean? I
don't think they were aiming for my toilet."

Local police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the
incident.

Airliners are supposed to dump toilet waste over bodies of water.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do airliners actually empty the waste tanks in mid-flight or is this a malfunction of some sort? I thought it was always removed by the ground handling trucks once the plane lands....

>>>Do airliners actually empty the waste tanks in mid-flight or is this a malfunction of some sort?

It never ceases to amaze how the "experts" in the media continue to perpetuate this idiotic myth...

You are correct, the stuff gets dumped while the aircraft is serviced on the ground. Occasionally, one of the valves involved leaks, and inflight, the "stuff" freezes, breaks off, and plummets earthward.

They aren't supposed to dump their waste anywhere in the sky, only on the ground when the lav changer does it. I heard about some family who had a similar thing happen to them somewhere around Atlanta. They seriously didn't know what it was and all the authorities showed up at their house. It started to melt and then they figured out what it was...

As a ramp agent for Trans States Airlines (aka American Connection) here in St. Louis, Missouri, one of my job functions is to perform "lavatory service" (empty the toilet!) on all of our a/c while obviously on the ground! I think it's safe to assume that any "reputable and legitimate" commercial air carrier would do the same!

Happened in Ontario a few years ago, too. Landed in the master bedroom while the couple was asleep. I could just imagine the wife being woken by the loud noise, smelling the crap, and accusing the husband of letting out a loud one... Till she sees the hole in the ceiling.

"The family has a second bathroom which wasn't hit"
What is the relevance of that statement?

Airliners are suppose to dump toilet waste over bodies of water"
Oh??? I can just hear the environmentalists screaming upon reading this (misguided) statement.

Who writes this crap? Better question - Who allows this crap to be printed?!

This is Ramp Agents duty not Pilots to drop it off over water.
As a Ramp Agent I've done this countless times. Even I had little accident with USAir DC-9, while I was holding hose it loosed somehow and I've got 'golden shower'  Smile
It was in winter so it was nice and warm  Smile

To those who are complaining about the technical inaccuracy of the article, I pose this statement/question:

Its the media reporting this...do you seriously expect them to be accurate?

its been a long time since Ive read an article from a non-aviation related source concerning aviation news or incidents that has had no technical flaws in it...this one keeps the ball rolling...

"I don't think they were aiming for my toilet."

In other news today, US Airways has announced a new cost cutting measure. Effective Wednesday, all ground service staff will be laid off. When asked how the lavatory tanks would be emptied, CEO David Siegel remarked "my ex-wife in Long Island better be ready for a suprise." When asked later about the cryptic comment, he laughed saying "The family has a second bathroom which won't be hit."
Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

The idiocy of another of the article's "facts" just now dawns upon me....

Using their statement, what's a JFK-LAX flight supposed to do from 35,000 feet, aim for the Mississippi river? Lake Whatchamacallit? The stock pond on Uncle Fred's farm?  Big grin

I saw this story in our local paper on Long Island. (though I cannot comment on whether or not this is copyright infringement)

But it was NOT blue ice and thus the authorities were still in question as to what the ice was.

I remember reading in a Airways article about lavs when in the good old days they actually dumped waste from the airplane, they had cute discreet signs saying "do not use over populated areas"  Big thumbs up
Imagine reading that on the lav door of a 777...

Some of the old Ford Trimotors and simular vintage aircraft had a overboad dump as you drop system.

What that means is that the Lav on the aircraft consited of a toilet seat mounted on a 9 inch wide piece of pipe that extended out the bottom of the aircraft.

You had to be pretty quick on that seat in the winter, because before you used it, you could look down the pipe and see the ground passing under you. of course all the air is blowing up the pipe too.

You are correct, the stuff gets dumped while the aircraft is serviced on the ground. Occasionally, one of the valves involved leaks, and inflight, the "stuff" freezes, breaks off, and plummets earthward.

Very serious business having a lav leak past the dump valve. A few years ago before they came up with a successful fail-safe secondary dump valve, we periodically had to perform a mandatory test on the integrity of the dump system. This entailed hooking up special tooling to the dump tube and applying a vacuum. If the negative pressure didn't leak down, you're good to go.

Twice actually. A National 727 in the 1970s, and an American 727 in the 1980s, both, ironically, over New Mexico..

I recall the AA one in particular. DFW-SAN, and after they told the pax an engine had failed and they were going to continue to the scheduled destination, some pax wanted to land in PHX. I remember the news footage showing just the empty mount sitting there... Weird....

I interviewed for AA in 1986, the interviewer asked, "What would you do if a blue streak is observed on the side of the fuselage". He wasn't looking for , "Clean it off".  Smile

If I recall correctly, the crew wasn't actually aware they physically lost the engine. They did however find the engine lying in the desert.

Yep, I seem to recall that also. They found it a night or two later with IR equipment, since the thing absorbed so much sunlight and thus heat.

I may still have it around somewhere, but a buddy of mine "at another airline" gave me a copy of a joke engineering drawing that was circulating. The "proposal" was for installation for a new cockpit instrument, an "engine quanity indicator" with hash marks at "1", "2", and "3." There was a green arc clockwise starting at "3", a yellow arc clockwise between "1" and "3", and very thoughtfully, a RED arc counterclockwise from "1.."

Also have a 1979-vintage very FAA-ish looking joke AD for the DC-10 mandating installation of part number such and such for a "GBHC" (great big hose clamp" around the wing and engine pylon....
