VLM's New MAN-LCY Service Off To A Flyer

Tue Sep 10, 2002 7:42 pm

Only inaugurated yesterday, they are already contemplating increasing frequency on the route due to heavier than anticipated bookings and possible introducing more services from MAN.

The first service was half full and have said that they need to achieve 35,000 passengers a year for it to be profitable but they are aiming to attract over 100,000 passengers a year over the next 3 years.

It operates 5 times a day Monday to Friday, with 2 services on Sunday and not as indicated on this story in the Manchester Evening News.

Interesting time comparison is listed:

It left Manchester at 9.30am and after a 51-minute flight into London City Airport and a short bus journey, passengers arrived at Canary Wharf, the capital's financial centre in a little over an hour.

A train from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston takes two hours and 40 minutes. And next summer, rail commuters face considerably longer journey times for three months when sections of the west coast main line will be closed for work to enable it to take high speed tilting trains.

Manchester air passengers who fly to Gatwick and Heathrow also face lengthy train and bus journeys into the capital.

People who travel by coach can expect a four hour journey from Chorlton Street in Manchester to London.

Fares start from £20 one-way plus taxes (around £25 I believe)
