Thu Sep 12, 2002 5:36 am

A Washington Dulles bound Boeing 767-322ER operating as United 971 from Milan, Italy has landed in Gander. Why? Is it some medical emergency or what? Please help.

If I had to take a guess, I would say it is a mechanical problem. The time at Gander is about 6 hours, which would probably be enough time to get a new aircraft up to YQX from IAD, it is about a 2.5 hour flight up there from IAD, transfer luggage b/n the two aircraft, as well as the passengers. This also could be enough time for mechanics to get there and have a chance to fix the aircraft. However I am sure someone in UAOPS would have a better idea what happened.

it shows it diverted to YQX due to a mech in route to IAD.

MSY-MSP,
you called it, UA is swapping planes out.

swapping N652UA
for N658UA

or within the company 6352 for 6358

Thanks, It just made sense to me with that long of a delay at YQX that UA had to be sending a replacement aircraft up there. Do you know if the aircraft is coming from IAD, BOS, ORD of EWR? I had this happen to me once with UA at MSY. Our 727 got hit by a catering truck on the starboard engine, and we had to wait while UA ferried a new 727 from DEN for us. Thanks for the info.

Engine problem. Nothing security related.
