A380 Emergency Slides/Rafts

Fri Sep 13, 2002 10:53 am

Im just wondering what (is meant to) happen with the upper deck when there is a water landing with the A388? I know with the 744 you arent meant to use the upper deck exits how will airbus address this.

btw way before all the smart..... answer i know if there is a crash landing there is little chance the rafts will be used

Someone posted some pics of the emergency slides of the A380 a while ago on this forum, it was quite crazy.

What i am interested in is what are they going to do for the passengers on the upper deck for rafts. Most AC slides turn into rafts, on the 744 the UD passengers have to go downstairs.

I think there was a quote from a CAA top-brass in Flight International which said something to the effect of "I'd have to have my @rse on fire before I'd slide down it."

In case of a crash landing, your ass probably _will_ be on fire.

I remember reading somewhere that the reason they couldn't have the top deck all the way along the 747 was due to the emergency exit situations etc. How has this been overcome by Airbus for the 380?

I'm sure they'll find a way to satisfy CAA and FAA.

It is interesting to note that Airbus has chosen not to push the evacuation certification beyond 550 pax at this point.

Likely this is what is holding any Japanese carrier from seriously considering a domestic model (?)

Source is both Flight International and AW&ST.

Perhaps Airbus also wants to prevent the airlines from cramming the plane full of seats. They quote a similar motive in deciding the diameter of their planes - so airlines wouldn't be tempted to put 2-3-2 seating in business class.

This doesn't sound very market-oriented at first glance, but perhaps they're thinking of it as an investment in their brand.

It can, however, accomodate 3-5-3 with 17" aisles on the main deck.
That's pretty scary.
