Glory Days: Lost Liveries Of The 1980's

Sat Sep 14, 2002 5:50 am

As a nice follow up to my 90's startups post, I thought I'd do a similar post dedicated to the lost liveries of the 1980's. However, unlike my 90's thread that only focused on airlines that came and went during that time, in this one I've decided to include now gone liveries of airlines that still exist. I would have to say that the 1980's here in the States was the best time in air travel history: Low fares, a huge variety of airlines (and liveries), no shadow of terrorism, and no air rage.

I would love to have included some of the Canadian and European airlines as well, but that would be too labor intensive. Maybe someone else will be inspired to do a pictorial like this for our Neighbors. These pictures were hard enough to chronicle. But I think it was worth it. I hope you agree.

Hosanna! Hosanna! Great thread, Cerulean!!!

I LLLLLLLOVE 80's liveries; and I too have been thinking lately about those fat, lavish times we were having two decades ago. Eastern, Pan Am, TWA, Braniff, Piedmont, and of course the mightily prestigious PeoplExpress all plied our skies...

The liveries are clean and crisp, with cheat lines and distinguished lettering. It wasn't just American carriers that had this going on either; Air Canada had a cheatline livery; Saudia and Air New Zealand did as well, with much sleeker lettering than the current over-ornamented, seriffed fonts that just litter today's fuselages.

(a thought: Today's seriffed "AIR CANADA" titles seem like they might be trying to mimic ol' Pan Am's)
Pancakes are delicious.

Canadian spotters certainly had more variety in the '80s -- and not everything was toothpaste-white.
