Varig Md-11 At SAN 9-16-02...Why?

Tue Sep 17, 2002 3:05 am

Hi all,

A Varig Brazilian Airlines Md-11 apparently spent the morning in San Diego today. Although I get conflicting information from flight-tracking websites, I'm pretty sure Flight 8838 arrived in Los Angeles from Sao Paulo around midnight, then made the short hop down to San Diego at 1:14AM, arriving around 2AM.

The plane spent about 8.5 hours here in SAN, before taking off for LAX at 10:41AM today (just a few minutes before I started this thread). I myself saw it depart, so I can definitely confirm its existence at SAN.

So, why was this exotic aircraft at SAN? Did it perhaps need maintenance that couldn't be completed at LAX? Was it a charter? Or was SAN's restricted runway being used for crew training? The latter two seem pretty unlikely. Right now, my best theory is that it was simply too crowded at LAX, and the aircraft had to be ferried down to SAN in order to get a parking space.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Aaron G.

P.S.-There were huge delays at SAN this morning due to fog...I could theorize that the GRU-LAX flight was diverted to SAN because of similar conditions at LAX, but each flight-tracking website I went to said that RG 8838 had landed at LAX.

Not everyday that you see an MD-11 at SAN. That must have been pretty cool. New colors, I suppose?

I only know of one other occasion in which an MD-11 has come to San Diego and it was also a diversion from LAX. It was an Alitalia plane that flew in because of the LA riots back in 1991.

Do you really think they'd fly it in, just for a parking space? Why not use Long Beach or Ontario instead?

Yeah, a single engined Cessna flipped nose over down the runway here at Lindburgh and closed the airport for over an hour. They think the reason was because of the wake turbulence from a bigger jetliner. I didn't hear anything about a Varig MD11, but that plane would cause turbulence over a Cessna. Also, flights to SAN were rerouted to LAX, ONT and SNA.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

That's horrible news! Do you have any news of injuries or fatalities?

ABC News reports that the single pilot in the Cessna walked away from the crash.

Footage from the TV news reports show the Varig aircraft near the scene of the accident. Go to http://images.ibsys.com/2002/0916/1669952.jpg for a picture of the accident; you can see the tail of the MD-11 in this video capture.

I'm still not sure whether Varig 8838 flew into San Diego direct from Sao Paulo, or down from Los Angeles.

Back in the day I know AA used to overnight DC-10's at SAN. I knew a pilot there and he used to fly LAX-BOS, but the flight would orig in SAN and fly the short hop to LAX. I've seen Delta there late at night and it looked like they overnighted quite a few there as well.

Most logical reason = $$$$. Cost difference to park an MD-11 for 8+ hours at SAN vs. LAX outweighed the cost to fly it there and back.
