BA Cuts Charlotte

Wed Sep 18, 2002 2:03 am

It seems like one stop service just don't seem to work. This route appeared to be doing pretty good when it was going nonstop to Gatwick (of course the economy was better at the time)

British Airways to Suspend Charlotte Services
Tuesday September 17, 12:35 pm ET

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- British Airways will suspend its daily service between Charlotte and London effective Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, the start of the airline's winter schedule.

"It is with regret that we have taken this decision to suspend service from Charlotte, a city we have served since January 1994," said David Noyes, British Airways' Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing North America. "The suspension of the Charlotte/London route was a decision based on commercial reasons and continuation of the service could not be justified in the current economic climate.

"This action is an integral part of the company's 'Future Size and Shape' program, announced earlier this year to offset events from last year's economic turndown and the attacks of Sept. 11th, 2001.

"Future Size and Shape is designed to return the airline to profitability by reducing the size of the airline, reducing costs and improving efficiencies.

"British Airways is strongly committed to the USA market and will be keeping this route under review. Customers holding reservations for winter 2002/2003 will be offered a full refund or bookings on alternative British Airways flights."

The daily service between Charlotte and London Heathrow stops in Baltimore in both directions, and daily non-stop flights between Baltimore and London Heathrow will continue.

Sad, but hardly surprising. Lufthansa had daily 747 service into CLT in the early 90's, but couldn't turn a profit. Frankly, I'm surprised BA kept this route alive as long as it did.

Charlotte desperately wants to be a "World Class City" but stuff like this kinda shoots that idea down... Oh well...

I'm not surprised it newer worked on a one stop via Baltimore, who wants to do that when US offer non-stop flights.

When I took ths US flight last year it was about 90% full.

All in all, good new's for US.

Wasn't this flight originally instituted as part of the USAir-British Airways partnership in the early 1990's? If I remember right, US instituted its own CLT-LGW flights after BA started to cuddle up to American a few years later. The market probably supported both flights in a good economy without terrorism and security issues. But nowadays, two dailies on CLT-London was probably too much.

Glad to see that BA is continuing at Baltimore. That market must still be pretty strong.

Jim-

I think the US flights to LGW started a lot earlier than that... In fact, I think that flight can be traced back to when Piedmont first started flying CLT to LGW back in the 80's... When Piedmont merged with USAir, I think USAir continued the route up into the current day... I could be wrong, but I think that's how it happened.

I do think the BA flight into CLT began with the US-BA partnership. I'm not sure if US suspended the route during that short-lived partnership or not... The BA flights operate in and out of Heathrow, so maybe US still ran service to LGW, I don't know...

Thanks for the correction Chazzerguy....how could I forget? Piedmont bought 767's to open up the CLT-LGW route. I thought I was just losing the short-term memory in my old age, but I guess at some point long-term memory deteriorates too.  Smile

I flew BA CLT-LGW-CLT back in June 2000. Back then it was a 777 and the flights were ridiculously packed with people.

I wonder what Charlotte Douglas will do with all the new gates they have added on to it's international terminal this year. They have tripled the size of it. With only US Airways flying to London and Frankfurt along with the Caribbean it seems like a huge waste of wide body accessible gates in this brand new terminal. Hopefully US will join STAR or something and get some other airlines into here. Otherwise I guess those gates will be available for heavy domestic flights such as CLT-LAX or CLT-MCO for US Airways.

one of the reasons the terminal was built was probably to increase caribbean flts since those flts need to go through customs as well. As for US airways joining STAR, if they do i think PHL will see the most new airlines/flts come in with CLT only getting a few.

And also, there is still use with CLT-CDG flight on the route by US Airways as for now. I do think about this one as for myself and can you please tell me about what is goes on as for with US Airways by join to Star Alliances. I think will be increase of the added flight from CLT-LAX flight on bigger aircraft. This is must be doing very well on the this route. Well, later!!

As a huge BA enthusiast in CLT this is truly sad.  Crying I hope one day we can see the return of Speedbird to the Queen City!

At least our international terminal will still get some exercise (Hopefully BWI won't be the next route cut.)

Would KLM/NWA be able to manage CLT - Europe via AMS with a 767 ? Or perhaps 747 Combi (with freight) ?

With our large German population and businesses here as well as smaller aircraft in LH's fleet to fit in the CLT route, I'd think a CLT-FRA may be able to make a go.

B764-

Well, don't forget, Lufthansa has dropped CLT once already!... They had daily 747 service into the Queen City about 10 years ago... But, surprise surprise, USAir dropped their German destination fares to the floor and priced Lufthansa out... As soon as Lufthansa left, USAir raised prices through the roof, and there they have remained since!

I heard that in the final days of Lufthansa service, they were bringing the 74 up to the gate in CLT with fewer than 100 pax on it...

Until USAirways and the City of Charlotte get out of bed with each other, I doubt many foreign carriers will stand much of a chance here. A KLM 74 combi would be cool to see here though!

HA! I flew BA and AF and didnt like them near as much as **shudders** United.

Chazzer do you have ANY pictures of a 747 here in Charlotte? I have never seen a single one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love coming out to watch the US A-330 land its about what 3:30 PM I think isnt it? Last time that I saw it, it got to about 15 feet off of the runway and took back off an it pitched up excessively and was dropping alot of altitude I thought it was seriously going to crash! I have seen many airplanes and TOGO's but never anything like this, and trust me I know how they work and know enough to know this wasnt "normal". (Half of my family including myself are pilots or aviation related employees..) Anways but I was also told that someone operates cargo 747's into CLT nightly but never have I seen one there.................

I invite you to join our Yahoo! group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PlaneSpottingCLT/

If there's a 74 sitting on the ramp at CLT, you'll know it soon enough with this group!

No, I do not have a pic of the LH 74 at CLT... But I recall it was quite a site!... If memory serves, it would come in around 1630 or so, and it just looked so huge compared to anything else in the air... I could always spot it MANY MILES out because it just looked so different.

Evergreen was operating a nightly 74 in and out of CLT, and this was a recent topic of discussion in the group... But I think the last anyone saw it was 2-3 years ago. Emery was flying a DC-10 out of here every morning... I used to see it make a right turn and fly over my office and Uptown, but haven't seen it now in about a year...

Ironically, BA will be flying a 777 in here beginning the 27th, and ending the 27th of October. Other than that, there are a few DC-8's that come in for BAX and UPS, and I think an A300 for FedEx... That's about as exotic as it gets these days...

One of the members of the group last week spotted an L-1011 parked out there with the name "Global" on the side... But we couldn't get the reg, and it appeared to be a one-day thing... I assume it was freight.

I have seen and taken a picture of the Lufthansa 747 at Charlotte. Back in the 90's I flew a US Airways 767 from Miami to Charlotte and our flight parked right next to it at terminal D. As soon as we parked the 747 was just about ready to push back. I rushed off the plane and into the terminal and got a shot of it leaving the terminal area. The picture didn't come out very well because it was through the windows of the terminal. If I can find it I will post it on the CLT Spotter yahoo group soon.

I have also seen several times a white DC-10 flying very low late at night, at around midnight in areas of the city where low flying aircraft is very rare. I figured out it one night because buzzed my apartment and once again I don't live that close to the airport. However it was low enough that I could see the logo and titles and that the landing gear was down. It was a World Airways DC-10F. I looked it up on the computer soon after it had passed and sure enough I was right. It was coming from Miami. I have seen it several times since then, each time at around midnight not flying the normal flight pattern and very low.

Speaking of World Airways, I also remember seeing a World Airways MD-11 at terminal D all the time in the 90's. I think they offerered scheduled charter service but am not sure for who and where they flew too from CLT.
