Bmi Expansion At Manchester?

Wed Sep 18, 2002 2:46 am

Does anybody know how they are planning to develop MAN as a hub? I understand they are starting new routes to EDI - any chance of seeing any other new routes in the near future? How about a nice Belfast link to challenge BA?

Think the original plan was to develope man as a hub, however i cant see this happening due to their financial problems and increased bmi baby activities. it would be great to have man as a baby hub. this would finally give us in manchester a better choice than having to treck over to liverpool for easyjet. hope bmi can get some reduced fee`s to allow baby opps, this would be great. a service to belfast would be even better, i`m flying from belfast city to man tomorrow with ba, i couldnt face going with easyjet to liverpool! bring on bmi baby to man!!!!!  Smile

its just the fact that you have to plan your journey with loadsa extra time cos in manchester central trains are terrible, i`ve missed two flights home cos of late trains, even getting from the station in liverpool to the airport takes like half an hour! thank god for airmiles, i`m flight cost £12 with 200 miles, thats nothing!

ps. where is sheffield!!!!!! south of man????  Big grin

bmi will make a hub of MAN....we're to be the 2nd "mainline" base. It's not just a case of their own metal being flung to MAN for new routes - the prospective domestic routes from Eastern Airways are expected to be codeshared with bmi. Given a presumed bigger domestic amount of transfer traffic, they may start to add new services to Europe but don't envisage anything bigger than the ERJ145 on any new route for the next couple of years. The mid to long-term future for MAN should be very interesting as the government is expecting us to complement LHR as a hub. If we can allow ourselves some delusions of grandeur, I would like us to develop in much the same way as MUC has but with the added benefit of having 2 airline alliances being strongly represented here (T1 for Star and T3 for oneworld), and, to a lesser extent, Skyteam picking up the crumbs (residing in T2).

Speaking of Skyteam, CSA are moving to T2 from 27th October and hope to increase capacity on the MAN-PRG route next summer; the 9 weekly services have seen a nice increase in passenger numbers: some 50% increase in capacity leading to over 40% increase in passenger numbers.

bmi don't seem to have anything major planned for the forthcoming season at MAN. They'll be continuing the LHR, ORD & IAD services, and bmi regional will continue to serve GLA, EDI & ABZ. There is a new route, though.... Toulouse!
The MAN-TLS-MAN flight will only operate once each day using an Embraer ERJ-135, in place of the mid-morning MAN-EDI-MAN rotation.
