New AA Service To LGA From BOS

AA has been running ads in Boston about starting new flights to LGA in October. And adding flights to DC. Its actually American Eagle using RJ's. Why are they adding them? In anticipation of US dropping out of the shuttle business? I know DL scaled back their shuttle ops after 9/11.

Dunno why AA would like to start this service which had been already started by 2 airlines. I rather take the train to Boston from New York unless the airlines cut their RT fare to $50.

right, started, expanded, then shrunken after 9/11 by USAIrways, and Delta.

Delta is also resuming its CRJ service every other hour on BOS-DCA with CRJs. Personally, I think this service will flop unless enough AA FFs can make it work. DL and US dominate the Shuttle market, and they won't be too eager to let AA grab a hold of it. Also, Amtrak is a major player now, when the Acela trains are working. It takes about 2h20 minutes to get from downtown Boston to midtown Manhattan by air (30 minute Boston drive, 20 minute check-in, 1 hour flight, 40 minute New York drive; all at AM rush hour) compared to the Acela, which is 3h30; at times cheaper; and gets you right from downtown Boston to midtown New York.

Why only RJ's from BOS-DCA? Delta or AA could easily fill an MD-80 or a 737 on that route. Hell, PVD has 4 daily flights to DCA on 734's and 319's from Us Airways!

Clearly, AA's intention is to grab its AAdvantage members; shuttle routes are very high yield (rarely do folks fly on $39 tickets).

And I'm always confused by this concept of "why bother when others have service..." In that case, should LAX-JFK only be flown by two airlines?

USAIRways used to do 737's from BOS to DC
DELTA used to do 727/737's from BOS to DC

After 9/11, they cut service, and Delta switched to RJ's. USAirways now uses A319's and has cut service.

I was just curious as to why AA would start up on a route where there is already a glut of seats. (so says US and DL)

I agree that the Acela has become a huge hit. They did suffer during their shutdown a few weeks ago. It is a time saver but, not a money saver. My company pays for either so it does not matter. I wish they would expand the service further.

Its a great idea to keep frequent flyers on American, before this they either had to fly US or DL shuttle to LGA, or Eagle to JFK. Smart move. Acela only really cut into the airline's pockets after 9/11, when getting through security and checking in would usually take around an hour. Acela offers no distinct monetary advantage to the airlines, but occiasonally Acela can get delayed at stations. Some NY paper did a test of what go you to Boston fastest, and Acela only beat the plane by 2 minutes.
