LiveTV In Aircraft

Thu Sep 19, 2002 5:14 am

What was the first airline to debut satellite TV in their fleet?

From all I know I think it was Legend Airlines at DAL, but I could be wrong.

Is this service available in Europe yet?

How cool would it be to fly internationally watching programs in other countries?

JetBlue started it in Feb. 2000, with Legend following in April.

Legend did not have the LiveTV service, jetBlue was the first.

jetBlue bought LiveTV and will sell it to other airlines if they please, A Very smart move.

JBLUA320,

Legend DID have seat-back, 20-channel satellite TV. I'm not certain which company it was, so you may be right that it wasn't LiveTV. But it was something! As was Legend...

It was DirecTV if I can remember correctly.

Was the live TV anything to do with those 'lumps' on Legends' DC9s??

It's my understanding that Jetblue passengers watched all the details of the 9/11 attacks on their personal TVs during their flights.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

Is JetBlue's purchase of LiveTV legal?

It seems like they're kind of taking control of the market.

jetBlue did not have LiveTV at launch. I remember flying them April 2000, and the system had not been placed yet.

For some reason I thought JAL had it as well - I remember reading it in a trip report somewhere.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Folks, IMHO JetBlue will not reject letting other airlines(including competing ones) get LiveTV. Not only would that backfire on them when the others are introducing better perks such as high speed internet and such from other providers, but the main thing is that LiveTV LLC is an investment. Currently, B6 has to pay all the expenses, and given the size of the deal, I think that LiveTV was losing money. Unless B6 can get more partners like F9, this will just cost JetBlue a ton of money in the long run.

Not to mention LiveTv is merely a competitor.. They're not the only game in town.

Here is an interior shot of a legend dc-9 with DirecTV installed in Mar of 2000.

LC's was first to actually be up and operational.

Not that it matters any more (sniff).

It worked quite nicely.

Yeah, it was quite something. Do JB's aircraft have the bubbles on top like Legend?
