Surprise! Surprise! Air Malta To Join Skyteam

Thu Sep 19, 2002 5:18 pm

Good morning! Big grin

Here it is, on the front page of The Times of Malta:

http://www.timesofmalta.com/core/article.php?id=108992

My opinion about this news:

1- It comes to me by surprise
2- I think Air Malta fits rather well in SkyTeam - a lot of co-operation with Alitalia (for example Azzurrair), although I admit that I do not particularly like that (AZ) airline Big thumbs up
3- I like the fact that possibly in the near future, I might be able to connect onto Air France flights more easily. Air France, in my opinion, is a very good airline.

Regards to all,

A complete surprise for me too - even as an insider.

My opinion: It is about time KM started thinking about joining an alliance. But why Skyteam? AirMalta never had any ties with any of the member airlines. If anything, KM works closely with BA (KM owns shares in World Aviation that represents BA) and QF on North American and Australian routes. Also KM is looking closely at the LH reservation system as a replacement to the present Astral. So OneWorld and Star would have been a more logical choice. Having said that, I have always been of the opinion that KM was getting more isolated and joining an alliance is a sure step forward. Once - and, hopefully, if - Malta joins the EU, a world of opportunities will open up for KM. I am very excited about the possibilities. I hope it works and soon.

Just read the newspaper article that quotes AeroMexico as a Skyteam member. Isn't AeroMexico a Star member?

what is an associate member of skyteam, it isnt a full member is it, sounds more like its being a codeshare partner.

"Continental, KLM and Northwest"

Air Malta have a had a very successful Local market GDS distribution relationship with Delta Subsidiary Worldspan for the last decade or so. They are also close to Alitalia as well.
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Just looked at Air Malta's website and their current FF programme looks pretty stingey to me. Will they change from these 'air miles' to just miles like the others.

Anyone know what their prices are like, Malta to Tripoli or Manchester for example ?

Malta to Tripoli return is expensive. This is not a discretionary travel route and pax travel out of necessity. It is a 40 minute flight which will set you back around GBP200 + taxes.
A Malta - Manchester return from Malta costs the same. However if you are travelling to Malta from Manchester the best option would be to get a chartered ticket through a package holiday agent.
AirMalta is constantly under fire from Maltese travellers due to the high fares out of Malta. However in recent years there has been a considerable growth in the outbound chartered and package holiday sector that has produced affordable travel for the Maltese similar to what exists in Great Britain. The local market is however very small and such flights are seasonal and of very limited duration.

Well, if KLM (and Continental) join as well, I think it would really be great.

KLM is an excellent airline - I was a bit impressed - they instilled the commercial aviation bug in me. KM has daily flights to BRU and about 11 flights a week to AMS, IIRC. SkyTeam for KL & KM would boost frequencies to those destinations to serve as feeder flights for AMS and more O&D for BRU, I think.

Continental, I have the impression that they're quite good too.
I'd love to fly Northwest, but over here, on this forum, I heard a lot of negative comments about NW. BTW, I have posters that NW sent me a couple of years ago together with a CD that was specifically to be used for printing images of NWA planes. NWA planes cover the larger part of the poster area in my room.

IIRC, KM codeshared with Czech Airlines on the MLA-PRaGue route.

Re. Malta & the EU, I am looking forward to it too: I expect Air Malta regular flights to Naples, Bari, Bergamo, Venice and the UK cities where KM has only charter flights, ...and God knows where else.

Previously, I thought Air Malta would join oneworld in order to have a large market-share on the UK-Malta routes together with BA, -> reduced competition, higher fares and better yields.

Lufthansa has just set up a maintenance facility with Air Malta in Malta. Air Malta flies to the main German cities, but still, I simply did not see Air Malta in STAR.

Well.. Got to check the SkyTeam and KM websites. Was this news a leak or official? I bet it was the former..

Just a clarification to an above comment...
Air Malta does not own shares in World Aviation. This Australian GSA is part owned by British Airways and World Aviation is the GSA for Air Malta in Australia and the USA.

Whatever happens I do not expect KM to fly to regional airports like Bari and Venice from Malta. Malta will always be a mainly incoming tourist destination and these are purely outgoing leisure destinations for KM. I can, however, see KM flying to these destinations from another base in Europe. Azzurra was set up with the intention of having a foothold in Europe through the back door - since Malta is not an EU member state yet. When this, hopefully, happens I expect things to change.

Re World Aviation I will have to do a little checking as I'm sure that the Aussie branch was manned by some people who were seconded from KM.

Although I have been loyal to SkyTeam for the last ten years, they certainly have put together some carriers that have been considered rag tag by traditional consensus for some reason or other, i.e. Alitalia, Korean, & Aeroflot. Since I've never flown any of them, for all I know, I'm helping to propagate a huge myth.

I had never even heard of Air Malta prior to this post. Their web site is not the most professional, but this has no implication for their service or performance. Have any of you flown with Air Malta, and how do they rate in terms of general public opinion?

Yea, yea, I know Aeroflot is not yet a SkyTeam member, but it's apparently in the process of getting there.

AirMalta is a full service European airline that serves all major cities in Europe and North Africa with a mixed fleet of 9 B737 and 4 A320 aircraft. Our operation is built on the chartered market but we operate most flights with 2 classes - business and coach. Year after year we are awarded best charter airline by Thompson (now Preussag) and Airtours (now MyTravel) as we operate several series of flights on their behalf. AirMalta is a member of the European Airlines Association and has one of the best punctuality records of all European Airlines. We do our own engineering and heavy maintenance work on our aircraft. The excellent safety record has not gone unnoticed. This month saw the inauguration of Lufthansa Technik (Malta) - a joint parnership with AirMalta, whose CEO is the former AirMalta Chief Engineer.
AirMalta started operations in 1974 with two leased B720b aircraft.
Our website leaves a lot to be desired, true, but please do not judge a book by the cover. We are certainly not a rag tag airline. Do not get me wrong here.

LMML - No worries, my rag tag statement was not a reference to Air Malta in any way, shape, or form. I was solely referring to the enduring comments about KE's safety record, Alitalia's supposedly less then friendly inflight service, and Aeroflot's traditional public image.

I am happy to see SkyTeam expanding. I wish you and your airline the best!

This is great! I'm a big fan of Skyteam because I'm loyal to Delta. I was born in Tennessee, moved to Philadelphia, then Cincinatti, and now Atlanta, but about 14 of those years were in Cincinatti and Atlanta, so I feel a connection to Delta. Do you think that there is a slight chance of JFK or ATL to Malta in order to connect with Air Malta's flights? I don't see a big chance, but who knows?

I would be very surprised if there would be a Delta service from JFK or ATL to MLA. Air Malta has tried this twice, Once in cooperation with Balkan Bulgarian Airlines (JFK to Sofia via Malta), and once using a charterd 757 from ATA (JFK-MLA via Shannon).
From what I remember, there was not too much demand on the ATA, and my Maltese friends that took the Balkan flights were not impressed by it..

IMO if this were to happen, it would probably be a service that happened once weekly, summer only.

Many members have expressed the opinion that Skyteam would bring much benefits to Malta, but what value would Air Malta bring to Skyteam?

Regarding the US-MLA direct flights, I don't see that happenning in the near future. Especially since there is this "wide-body phobia" within the KM management. We need a big aircraft to operate to the US and we simply do not have it. AirMalta perceives large aircraft as expensive and unviable. In a way they are right. We operated an A310 for 18 months some 7 years ago. From my standpoint as an FA it was the best flying I did in my 24 years in the air. But KM claims it cost us $1M a month. Our traffic is seasonal - we have a summer peak and a slow winter. The philosophy is what do we do with a wide body in the lean winter months? We operate a fleet of 11 aircraft and lease 2 more for the Summer months. It has always been like that. I think it is about time that policy is changed. Look at our summer schedule:
3 flights to Paris every Thursday and Sunday plus one on Friday and two more on Saturday
2 flights to Amsterdam every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday plus a daily the rest of the week and a daily to Brussels
4 flights to London Gatwick on Saturday all within 1hr plus two more daily.
3 flights to Rome on Monday plus 2 more every Wed Fri Thu and Sun. Plus the normal daily.
9 weekly flights to Manchester including 3 flights on Saturday alone.
What I mean to say is that what KM needs is a wide body fleet all year round as the mainstay. And lease the aircraft OUT in the Wintertime.
Unlike other airlines, we do not need the frequency (except maybe to Rome and London). We are largely in the tourist business where capacity, not frequency, rules.
Now we have a new CEO - Ernst Funk. He has just been appointed on a three year contract with more than generous renumeration. Mr Funk is an ex-Swissair man, who left the company one month before it folded. I will not comment on his merits, or lack of them. I wish him luck and hope that Mr Funk will prove to be an asset to the airline.
Now to the other question: What can AirMalta contribute to Skyteam? The short answer is not much. But KM has a strong presence in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. With a worldwide Muslim community and with the many Americans with interests in this region this presence may prove beneficial. There is also the growing interest in Tourism to Malta from the Far East and from the US plus the growing Cruise liner traffic to Malta.
I am a strong beleiver that KM needs to join an alliance. My dream is in STAR Alliance. My hope is that the Skyteam alliance will be a step forward.
