Delta Connection Expands Montreal

Fri Sep 20, 2002 1:55 am

ATLANTA, Sept. 19 /CNW/ -- Delta Connection will offer
Montreal customers two additional daily nonstop regional jet flights between
Montreal's Dorval Airport and Atlanta beginning Nov. 1, 2002. The new
flights, operated with the passenger-preferred Bombardier CRJ, will improve
Montreal's existing schedule by adding flight frequency and seat availability
throughout the day.
With the new service operated by Delta Connection carrier Atlantic
Southeast Airlines, passengers will enjoy the convenience of 16 daily nonstop
Delta (NYSE: DAL) and Delta Connection flights to four U.S. destinations --
five flights to Atlanta, four flights to Cincinnati, four flights to Boston
and three flights to New York's LaGuardia airport.
"For the second time in 2002, Delta Connection has expanded its service in
Montreal, providing comfortable, convenient service to Delta's largest hub at
Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport," said Fred Buttrell, president and
chief executive officer, Delta Connection, Inc. "The additional flights allow
more passengers to take advantage of premium connecting opportunities to 210
destinations worldwide aboard more than 880 daily flights offered by Delta,
Delta Connection and Delta's worldwide partners at Atlanta."
Delta Connection previously added one daily nonstop, round-trip flight
between Montreal and Atlanta in May 2002.
Known for convenience, comfort and speed, CRJs feature a comfortable two-
by-two seating arrangement; every seat is an aisle or window, with no middle
seats. The plane can cruise at 530 mph at altitudes as high as 41,000 feet,
and is recognized as one of the quietest commercial aircraft in the world.

You didn't think DL would let AC start YUL-ATL without some kind of response!!

It'll be interesting to see if AC can make it work.

So in retrospect,

You dont think airlines work on some sort of prestige basis, or act uneconomically to preserve market share... well take a look at this..

May 2002:
YUL-ATL 2 daily MD88;s

Janaury 2003:
YUL-ATL 8 daily... 2 Md88, 6 CRJ's...

That makes a whole lot of sense, excpet for Montreal will be the land of CRJ's (yes we built them too!), and, it will probably knock DL mainline out of Montreal, and one day out of Toronto too.

I'm sure the market between ATL-YUL is growing, but not that fast. DL had added a third daily flight long before AC made their announcement.

These most recent additions reflect DL's desire to be competitive...DL has had a good amount of success at doing this too. Look at how few foreign airlines serve ATL. The only foreign passenger airlines that serve ATL that aren't DL codeshare partners are BA (ATL-LGW), LH (ATL-FRA) and AC (ATL-YYZ).

I guess DL might pull mainline off the route, however DL does have a scope clause that restricts the number of "long-haul" RJ flights. The mainline also gives DL a slight advantage as some more savvy business pax prefer a mainline plane to an RJ.

Jazz will be there as long as Delta keeps going..

Air Canada will do anything to defend its turf. Take a look at 38% load factor on YYZ-DFW, do you wanna believe that flight is profitable...give me a break.

Air Canada acts under threat.. actions at YUL only (its the same for any of its hubs)

YUL-LGA upgrades the flight to 7 a day after Delta and USAir start
YUL-CDG upgrades to 2 daily after AF threathens a 3rd daily flight
YUL-FCO wants route right after CP/AZ start route, get it the route cut it
YUL-LAX Air Canada double dailies it after Canada 3000 announces interest
YUL-PHL get a piece of it once US goes 4 daily
YUL-YHZ upgraded it in summer 2001 to 7 daily aftyer Canjet/Canada 3000, once they are gone, down to 4 daily flights..

The list continues....

Now we ask ourselves, in this day of age, do airlines put into effect actions that are otherwise unprofitable, uneconomical, or are out of simply pure competitive nature..

JAZZ will be on YUL-ATL for long....
