From what I remember, they flew DC-9s into some pretty small airports in their heyday, such as New Bedford, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Worcester, Keene, NH, Rutland, VT, Presque Isle, ME, to name a few. Were these routes government subsidised? I don't know how they could make money on these routes. NE always seemed to be a money losing carrier, probably in part, due to some of these obscure routes they were required to fly, especially in winter. It wasn't long after the merger with DL, as I recall, that most of these small New England cities were dropped, with the exception of a couple of cities in Maine, PWM and BGR. I think PQI stayed mainline for awhile, too.
