747 Service To ATL

Fri Sep 20, 2002 5:08 pm

Perhaps two years ago I read somewhere that for it's position as one of the world's busiest airports, it was surprising that there is no 747 activity at ATL. Was this true, and if so, is this still the case?

What aircraft type did KE use when they were flying to ATL, and were these non-stop ATL-SEL flights?

KE uses the 777-200s. JAL flew the 747s but that is no longer the case - now that they no longer serve ATL.

The last time i was in ATL, the SA 744 was parked at the T- gates... why was this??

Only reason I could think of was to free up international gates at the E- concourse during the lay over.

KE used to use its 744 on the SEL-ATL routes about 1 yr ago. There are some cargo 747s that do come into ATL....EVA Air switches between a 747 and MD-11 about 3 times per weeks. Also JAL cargo still operates its 747 here 2-3 times a week.
Take care all

The time that SA uses the INTL Concourse (E) in ATL is not a busy time for that concourse (0800-1100--the busy time is in the afternoon/evening 1400-2000). So, I doubt that the 747-400 you saw parked at Concourse T was there to free up space on E. Probably, the departures were leaving from the west side of the field that day (near T) and SA needed to come back to the gate for some minor maintenance and instead of taxiing all the way back to E, they were assigned a gate at T (a DL gate) and DL provides for their maintenance needs in ATL anyway.

Also, from time to time you'll see a KE 747-400 in ATL instead of their 777 (equip change presumably). There are still a few 747 cargo operators out of ATL...I've seen LH and China Airlines regularly and once in a while MP.

LH cargo and China Air cargo as well. ATL has lost many international carriers lately: KLM, Swissair, Sabena, JAL, Varig. The only long-haul passenger service other than Delta is on LH (340), AF (330, 777), KE (777) and BA (777).

Atlas Air, on behalf of BA, operates 747s at ATL.

AF, KE and SR used to operate 744s to Atlanta, one day I saw a LH 744 there but it was probably just an equipment change. KE now served ATL with 777s, and AF flies 777 and 330 to ATL. South African is the only passenger carrier that now serves ATL with 747s.
