Flying To Sydney

Fri Sep 20, 2002 5:57 pm

I want to fly from London to Sydney for 2 weeks and found this offer:

Airline : Korean Air

Outbound
Date : 21st Sep
Depart : Heathrow 22:00 KE908
Arrive : Seoul 16:50

Date : 22nd Sep
Depart : Seoul 20:35 KE811
Arrive : Sydney 07:40

Inbound
Date : 3rd Oct
Depart : Sydney 19:30 KE812
Arrive : Seoul 05:05

Date : 4th Oct
Depart : Seoul 13:00 KE907
Arrive : Heathrow 16:55

Cost : £666 + Airport Tax £86.40 = £752.40

Would anybody have any advice for me on this trip.

Why is this fare over £300GBP cheaper than most other flights, is there something I don't know here?

Korean Air have very little market share of the Kangaroo route and offer special prices to attract passengers.

The Korean Air reputation rightly or wrongly is not good and would not be considered an option by many in the UK or Australia.

There are safety questions surrounding Korean, particularly some recent concerns. However I am told their in flight service is very good and statistically speaking if you're happy to drive in your car to the airport, or to work every day, then you should have no concerns flying KAL.

They have many hundreds of safe departures and arrivals every week, and have had for had for several years.

It's your choice but I wouldn't be too concerned.

Regarding KE and low fares, they often are by far the lowest fare option from the West Coast of North America as well.

Korean certainly does get mixed reviews especially regarding their safety record. Although loyal to SkyTeam and all statistics aside, for the same fare I would choose a carrier with a more reputable safety record. However, for a good fare with substantial savings, I wouldn't hesitate to fly with them, albeit with a little anxiety.

I have heard quite favourable things about their inflight service.

As much as people say they want to fly a safe carrier, most peopel here drive cars. You have more of a chance of dying in a car than flying in a plane.

Should be a good trip, 747-400 from Heathrow to Seoul and the Sydney leg is one of those EQV jobs ("Equipment Varies"), MD11, 777 or 747 (not sure if they still have -200s and -300s).

I believe KE have converted all their MD11s to cargo ones. I could be wrong though... I have only seen their 777-300s & 747-200s in Sydney

All KE flights to Sydney are with 747-400's, the flights operate daily with 2 of those flights via Brisbane.

I've flown the exact same route as you (though I spend an extra day in Seoul, in order to do some sight seeing), and I can only say good things about KE.

The inflight entertainment is good, and the meals are also good. I can only recommend that you try the Korean meal instead of the "western" meal.

I had a Korean meal for the first time last night, holy mother of f***. Absolutely gorgeous, if totally weird. The starter was raw strips of beef with a raw egg on top. Gorgeous soup, incredible spices and flavours. If that's what they serve on KE, you'll have a great time (and a lot of trips to the WC).
