Thai Airway's Presence In North America

Sat Sep 21, 2002 1:43 am

Thai Airways has very little presence in North America, with the only service I am aware of to LAX. I find this a bit interesting. Is there not a strong market between North America and BKK?

On which international routes, if any, does Thai have a strong market share?

Back in the 80s and early 90s, Thai had a much larger presence/more frequent service. If my memory serves me, they started their N American service with BKK-NRT-SEA-LAX, then they started serving LAX directly and added service to D/FW and (I think) Toronto through Seattle. I was living in Dallas when they stopped their service there. I still remember how odd it seemed to see the Thai Orchid at D/FW.

Thai started to fall into hard times and discontinued most of their North American services. That is why they have such a small presence on that continent today.

Searpgx, you're right, they had those services in the 80s and they added Guam in the mid 90's but that was dropped too and left with the direct service to LAX via Seoul. There are certainly markets from other major US cities which are served indirectly or directly buy other Asian carriers or UA NW. Also Thai recently purchased more Airbuses and Boeings for opening new routes to the US in the near future.

Also, since Thai is part of * Alliance, they must get fed a lot of traffic North America-»Asia from AC and UA

Now instead of going through Seoul Kimpo to LAX, they switched back to KIX and NRT.I forgot to mention that incase we have some misunderstanding.

Right. They do not operate into SFO but code-share with United. TG fly they segment BKK to TPE. Then UA Aircraft take over from TPE to SFO.

Maybe when Thai decides to get the A345, they will start flying to America non stop from Thailand. BTW Thai used to fly to SEA via TPE.
