End Of Heavylift Cargo

Sat Sep 21, 2002 5:22 am

Another airline sadly ceased flying this month, with Heavylift Cargo folding their wings. I flew once aboard their fantastic Shorts Belfast and this was probably the best jump seat I ever had in my life. G-HLFT was the last flying Belfast in the world, and I don't think another airline will ever operate him again...

Good luck to all of you guys, from Heavylift and Prime, and thanks for the memories...

ATI reported it a few days ago. But the Antonov joint venture is still going.

Oh no, that's sad! I saw the Belfast a couple of weeks ago in Toronto, and thought it was a great site to see! I was hoping I'd see that aircraft again, but now I don't think that will happen.

I hear that Farhad Azima (who provided the financing for the purchase from Kvaerner) is spitting feathers over this ... it's the first time that he's been taken, rather than the other way around!  Big grin

The Belfast was nearly timexed, so its days were numbered...

That sucks.
I was lucky to fly with them recently, great crew. I'm gonna miss that old prop.

Another sad loss. Living the the south-east I've watched their a/c on countless occasions at SEN, STN, etc. I'm going to miss seeing them around. I know one Belfast is in storage at Southend...anyone know where the other one is?

Summarising bits from an Air Transport Intelligence article:
Heavylift Cargo has been forced to shut down after its sister companies (Prime and SEN based Heavylift Engineering) were put into administration last week. The company is in discussion with its financial backers (including Barclays and some US investors) but the CAA have thwarted attempts to keep the company going.

Fingers crossed that they can sort something out.

GKirk - nope, it's HC Airlines as well (which traded as Prime and HeavyLift Cargo Airlines). The only part of the group to remain in operation is the JV with Air Foyle, marketing the AN124.
