Does anybody know who or what Dick Drost is?
What's the story behind this Comet 4C?
Why is is not painted in the original Airline livery?
Why is it stored at O'Hare & not in the desert?

The story behind Dick Drost? LMAO!!!!

Old Dicky ran a nudist colony in (ironically enough) Roselawn, Indiana in the late '60s and '70s.

He moved out to California and was busted for being a pedophile...from there he went downhill; he is a nutcase.

His Comet 4 broke down at O'Hare in the '70s. He was kind of a "poor man's" version of Hugh Heffner, and used the aircraft for nudist charters. It was too expensive to be fixed (Comets were rare in the airways back then, even, with few spares), and it sat in the open (one of the first sights to behold as you entered the airport). The tires flattened, and the "lake effect" winters took their toll on it.

By the 1980s, the city of Chicago was really pissed off, and lableled the aircraft an official eyesore. The Tribune even did an article on its history (mid-80s). The aircraft generated a lot of interest, but no one had the resources to come through and seriously get it fixed. Of course Dick Deatbeated it off (pardon the pun).

This picture sure did stir up some memories, as I used to see this aircraft regularly as a kid.

TT737FO, Thanks for the information. Not exactly what I expected, but still most interesting.

I did a Google search before posting the question & came up with Dick Drost, a member of NUDIST/NATURIST HALL OF SHAME http://www.nostatusquo.com/ACLU/NudistHallofShame/Drost.html.
According to the article "Dick Drost, former owner of a Roselawn, Illinois nudist camp called Naked City (previously known as Zoro Nudist Camp), promoter of Mr. and Miss Nude Teeny Bopper Universe Pageants," and proprietor of Naked City West in Southern California was booked on 5 felony and 4 misdemeanors charges on April 7, 1990 in Riverside, California."

It never occured to me that this Dick Drost could own a Comet airplane.  Wink/being sarcastic

Interesting story. Must be to only US registered Comet. This Dick sure was a nuthead. Where is the plane now? Turned into Coke cans I presume.

Hi!

Actually that particular Comet was not the only one registred in USA. Mexicana sold their 3 ones to a US airlines called Westernair. I think this particular one is an ex: Mexicana/Westernair one. But besides these ones there where one ex: RCAF Comet 1X that latter passed to a man in Miami, unfortunetely this Comet was scrapped, a true Comet 1 that passed all those early problems and flew until early 70's.
