Star Alliance - New Members? -Qantas?

Mon Sep 23, 2002 3:20 am

Does anybody know when the new members LOT, Spanair and Asiana are to join Star Alliance?
Also, any news on a Qantas membership in Star (by buying into Air NZ)?
Thanks.

The chances that Qantas join Star are in my eyes rather impossible as Qantas has LHR as it's main European destination with a established network with BA. A move to Star would mean that the LHR operations would have to be moved over to FRA and QF therefore loosing marketshare since O&D to LHR is higher than to FRA. Joint forces with AA also seem to work fine (the 738 deal for example).

If Qantas can somehow get into NZ then the battle for Australia might get really bloody as Star wouldn't and couldn't accept that.

I see Air New Zealand joining oneworld before Qantas joins Star. I don't think Qantas would mind paying the 60 million pricetag to leave Star. Godbless gave some good reasons as well.

Not only that, but BA owns part of Qantas and BA would probably be the last airline to leave oneworld.

What about Air Jamaica? I thought they had some agreements with United.

After UA/US codeshare is approved, and US Airways pulls out of bankruptcy, I'm pretty sure they'll be joining Star

Why do people keep saying Qantas will join Star? Qantas will stay with OneWorld for a long time. ANZ is more likely to move to OneWorld should it conclude a deal with Qantas.

So how likely is it that Air New Zealand will leave Star for OneWorld? Is this going to happen as soon as Qantas gets a stake in Air NZ? Why aren't there any other Star members to help Air NZ out? Or are they not so keen to keep in Air New Zealand in Star?

According to the Star Alliance media release last June, 2002, Spanair, LOT, and Asiana were expected to join Star within six to twelve months.

New STAR members are voted in during meetings which occur every six months or so. I fully expect to see US voted in during the next meeting, assuming the UA/US codeshare receives the government nod from DOT.

If Qantas buys ANZ, Qantas will bring ANZ to OneWorld, not the opposite.

Just because Qantas is going to have a stake in Air New Zealand does not mean ANZ has to move to Oneworld, Qantas would I think perfer ANZ to stay in Star that will keep SQ out of the Pacific region and be better for ANZ in the long term. Alliances have nothing to do with airline relationships.........

Just wondering... everybody says QF will buy a stake in ANZ... what happens if SQ buys a stake in QF?

I think that QF will move to Star because it would have more flexibility than with oneworld destination wise. plus There is no way in hell star will lose another member in that region. According to a paper in the region (I do not remember which one) BA is talking to SIA about SIA buying its stake in QF

I don´t think that Qantas will join the Star Alliance.
It semmed that Qantas is good etablished into Oneworld and i don´t see any good reason why to hell Qantas should give up this alliance.

And if the major Australian Airline is goin´to take over Air New Zealand, I think that NZ will be taken from the "Stars" to Oneworld , not the other way round....

Wouldn't there be some major overlap problems (problems already exist with UA/SQ and TG/SQ) with Asiana, TG, SQ, and ANA all in the same alliance with UA having some asian presence as well?

I wish this issue with qantas and the star allaicne would be put to bed.there is no good reason why qantas should leave one world.

if it buys a stake in anz then it wont join the star alliance because having qf,anz and sia in the same alliance will raise competiton concerns, especially if singapore starts an austrialian airline. It ownt happen, further more BA have control over the board, they have 2 directors plus the veto on the chief exc, chairman and finance director, the 3 main directorships are controlled by BA.

Singapore airlines wont buy a stake in qantas, this is wishful thinking because theres a body of people deseperate to the extreme for a star-backed airline in australia.BA wont sell its stake.

It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit
