What Do You Think Of Malaysia Airlines?

Tue Sep 24, 2002 12:35 am

I haven't been on Malaysia Airlines for years. I was in KL sometime last year and I took Cathay Pacific instead.

What do you think of MAS? I mean for both short haul and long haul service? Is it friendly? Also, are the cabins clean or not?

Has anyone been on MAS's SYD-KUL route?

I heard that it is an underated airline. MAS is very good from what I heard.

Comments?

I'v been in both coach & Business.

Business ; sleeping comfort : not too great, tv screen : too big, food excellent (unforgetible Sahtee's.), crew : also excellent : every one knows your name etc ...

Economy ; best Economy class I've been on. Lots of legspace/recline, adjustable lumbar support, PTV with lots of movies games, sweet fa's... Yes for once I had a good sleep in coach, being 1.93 m ..

Well I was on a MAS flight from KL - LON about 10 days ago and I liked the flight a lot. The plane was a 747 so the ride wasn't all that bad even though I would've preferred to fly to LON in their new 772. I flew on Economy Class and still had a pretty good trip. The food, since I was in EC was normal plane to me but I still thought it was pretty good. Had some sort of chicken for dinner, and had tomato omellete for breakfast. As for inflight entertainment, the eFly system has a lot of games, about 13 radio channels and if i remember correctly, about 8 video channels. Everybody on the plane gets their own personal 10 inch tv screen. The crew were really friendly and the cabin was at all not that dirty. You have to remember this all happened while I was in EC not in Business of First. And finally, MAS I think is underrated. They should at least get some of the limelight and publicity that their fellow neighbours in Singapore get, because both airlines are really very good.

When I flew them back in 1995, I thought they were great. I was flying on the JNB-CPT-EZE route (744 there, 742 back), and had a wicked time. I was granted a visit on the flightdeck on the way back, whilst over the South Atlantic ocean at night...stayed talking to the crew for ages....they were very nice, and the engineer explained all sorts of buttons and their functions.

The cabin crew were also brilliant, the food also seemed to be top-notch, for Economy. Would definitely fly them again.

Thanks to them, I learned the meaning of 'Selamat Datang'....oh, and 'Tandas' Big grin

I've flown with MAS from KUL to MAN on a 772 a couple of years ago (Economy) and to be honest, it was the best long haul flight i've ever had.

I spent the majority of the flight playing Super Smash Tennis on the Nintendo that they had on their PTVs.

Leg room was excellent, service/food great.

Did a shorthaul flight from KUL to SIN earlier this year, and they were good too, but then again it was only a quick up and down flight.
Next flights: Nothing

My only experience on MH was in 1995. On the Fukuoka-Penang segment, the pilots let me sit in the cockpit observer seat in the A330. They hooked me up with food and soft drinks while I was up there. I've posted this before.

I am ever grateful to MH for that flight.

I have read that their 772 is equiped with an on board office, MH is the first airline which offers service like this.

I've flown with 4 of their 744's (kLAX-NRT,NRT-MKP,KUL-JNB and CPT-EZE) and 734(MKP-KUL) in 1997 .Although still none of their 744's had PTV's back then  Sad But the flight attendants were all very friendly without exception and yes ,the cabin was clean,I enjoyed every single flight with that carrier. It's one of the best in the world in my opinion.

I've flown ZRH-KUL-BNE/SYD-KUL-LGK-ZRH this year, with A333/772/734/744 and I was really surprised by the good quality of service, I really enjoyed this airline and would fly again with them anytime.

I'd say MAS is a really under-rated airline! It is as good as SIA and Cathay Pacific and there hub airport @ KUL is the best.

The thing i find great about MH is that whenever i am at the airport, there crews ALWAYS come through immigration SMILING and full of laughter!! This is much different say to NZ, SQ, QF, UA etc....who are all tired and worned out from the flight.

I have flown on MAS, both short haul and long haul, over the last couple of years. On one occasion, I got upgraded to Business but otherwise I was travelling Economy. I reckon they give very good value, good service and have sufficient leg space in economy - it certainly seems more than you get with CX or BA. The only hesitation I have in recommending them is that if you are using a connecting flight to catch a long-haul flight, you can find yourself with a long wait at Kuala Lumpur (but that's quite a nice airport....!)

All they need is a new livery..badly. My dad flew them a couple of years ago he liked it a lot. Service is apparently very very nice, as you can see from the above posts. I've wanted to fly Malaysian for a long time, hopefully I'll get a chance sometime soon.

I've flown at last count over 400 sectors with them. Long/medium/short haul, in all classes and on all of their fleet, past or present. They've made a huge turnaround from the days when Tajudin Ramli ran the company, and almost ran it into the ground.

Their main strength is really their cabin crew, which I find are generally genuinely warm and pleasant to fly with.

My main gripe with them is their current C and F product. Most majors have beds in F and quite a lot of them are coming along with Beds in C as well. MH has neither, which leaves them at a slight disadvantage.

Still, they've now got Leo Burnett onboard doing their PR and ads for them, and I think that's helped somewhat. They've got a new management team and I think things are looking up for them.

Travelled twice from MAN to KUL with Malaysian.

First time Business class, B772. Sparklingly clean aircraft inside and out. Seats not the most modern and only reclined to about 145 degrees, but comfy enough. Attentive, smiling crew even after 12 hours. Personal touches included being called by name, and excellent trolley service at meal times. The level of service in their Golden Club class puts SQ's Raffles class to shame without a doubt.

Second time was non-stop on the B744 and I was luckily upgraded to First. Truly excellent. Again, the seats are not fully flat, but I managed to sleep far better than in SQ's suite which I found to be firm and uncountoured.

Whilst the seats may not be the most modern on the market, MAS more than makes up for it with the level of service and friendliness of their crew. Other neighbouring carriers charge inflated prices for what I call window dressing, whereas with MAS you pay a reasonable price for an excellent product.

I can recommend them to you without exception.

Whoever says that MAS is a yucky airline, I can truly say you have never flown it enough to experience the excellent service provided. Almost all my flights are flown with them and there is a reason why i remain loyal to them, even though i am Singaporean.

I wouldn't mind going through the transit in KLIA just to get to my destination. And The Skytrax Best Cabin Staff award is well deserved for MAS, I hope that is one of the many awards they would win, following Conde Nast's Best Business Class for 2 years running.

I have flown with them in all classes and i have never been disappointed. Although some sceptical Singaporeans might beg to differ, and some might even swear by her closest competitor, Singapore Airlines, I say to them "Try Malaysia, fly Malaysia"...

However patriotic some Singaporeans may be, I can only take so much crap from the world's most snobbish airline.

MAS is seriously under-rated, I don't blame the public because it wasn't too long ago in the early 90s that they were the airline to avoid. but they have turned around tremendously, just like how Qatar Airways did.

When the airline was going through the worst financial turmoil in history (to the brink of bakruptcy), the cabin crew sure showed no signs of it. Service remained top-notch to the end. Morale of the cabin crew remained intact and this gave me new found respect for them. Humble of the current situation, yet proud of the nation's airline without even a tinge of snobbery (Unlike Singapore Airlines).

There has never been a flight that I wasn't referred to by my name when i am in First or Business Class.

Just read my trip reports, if you are not convinced.

Cheers
Ryan

I'm flying quite often on MAS and I like them compared to other Asian carriers such as SQ, TG or CX. I flew Economy in the 744, 772, 330, 734, F50 and DHT and Golden Club (Business Class) in the 744, 772 and 330.

The product is excellent and you should try it out!

My best experiences was on MH. However, I only flew with them on their 744s and 734. Their short isn't really much to brag about, it's so-so. But their long-haul is excellent, IMO better than SQ or CX, maybe even the best in the world. Comfy, good food, friendly crew. I remember, when i was younger, they always used to ask me if i would like to visit the cockpit. The pilots were very friendly and showed me what all the knobs and switches do. Cool.

IMO, MH is definately underated. And the people who think MAS is not a safe airline obviously don't know what they are talking about.

I think SIA is more famous around the world and has a bigger fleet then MAS. That is why when asked for a cpomparison between the two, people tend to answer SIA.

Umm...... I agree. Maybe because of that accident back in the 70s. But that was quite a while. How many fatal accidents did MAS have? The last one was in the 90s. Right?

They had 2, one was a 732, supposedly a hijack (i think) and the other was an F50 back in 95.

a B732 was hijacked (rumoured a gunshot was fired) and yes a F50 at Tawau, landed short of runway claiming a few lives. But don't forget a A300 that crashed while landing at Subang. There may be a few more that I dont remember. But overall, they are very SAFE!

MAS flies more pax than SIA but SIA has more Pax Mileage since MAS has a big domestic network which SQ doesn't have.

Regarding the 732, I have seen once in the internet that the hijacker shot both pilots and well, the plane went down...

There was another incident with an A300 years ago and the plane hit a few trees near SZB but as far as I know no casualties.

Would consider MAS as very safe

Once again - I feel I ought to stop this comparison between Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Its like comparing siblings - afterall they grew out of the same airline (Malaysia-Singapore Airlines) and their philosophy towards air travel remain firmly similar. MAS has a large domestic network which skews the comparison somewhat since SIA doesn't have this same role as a national carrier. The two airlines also started on unequal footings when MSA split (as MAS got a few 737s and F27s whilst SIA kept most, if not all, the 707s and larger aircraft).

Give credit where credit is due - SIA is an international carrier with an excellent reputation. MAS too has built up its reputation to compete with its neighbouring 'brother'.

As a frequent flyer with BA (since I live in the UK) - nothing pleases me more than to get a chance to fly with MAS. The service is truly excellent regardless of the class in which you are seated. The first time I was called by name by a cabin crew member in Economy whilst dinner was served was something I would never forget for some time to come. The food is great and their aircraft well-maintained inside and out. MAS has a good habit of cleaning their toilets in-flight and on my last LHR-KUL-LHR flight the sink and toilet was always spotless even at the back of the plane (which catered to most of the pax enroute).

This is in stark contrast to BA which I feel takes the p*ss on their 'Welcome Aboard' video asking passengers to clean the sinks on their way out of the loos and the last time I flew AF when their 777 ran out of water so toilets were unserviceable for more than half the 13 hour flight.

That A300 accident happened on the 18th of Dec 1983. I think it was a dry leased one from SK. A friend of mine (a local golf pro) was on board. He was travelling back from a tournament. All that was left from his set undamaged/intact was his 4 iron. He's still got it in a wooden case as a keepsake.

Can't say much, as I've flown SIA all my life. Blueshamu330s, I found the level of service on SIA much nicer than what you described. Ultimo seats in Raffles Class was quite comfortable, I actually managed to fall asleep. No "icy smile" for me!

Flown MAS in 1989, when I was still a young kid. Only thing I remember was that it was a Boeing 737-200 and I had ear block during descent. Was crying like hell.

Regarding the size, MAS was South East Asia's largest carrier. But after the recent streamlining of fleet, not too sure about the numbers now. They once held the coveted title of being the largest operator of the 737 outside US. Now the 737-400s number about 36, thus I am not sure if this description still stands.

Although I am a big fan or Malaysia Airlines, I have to admit that SIA is somewhat more successful to an extent. They have a larger network and more flights despite they do not have any domestic. Most of their flights are profitable and have pretty high load factors. Singapore is a very small country, in fact, an island. But look at the amount of flights they get each day, the amount of transit passengers they get, it is much more than MAS'.

Malaysia Airlines is, too, a very good airline but if it was managed and marketed better in the early 90s it would be comparable to SIA today in terms of size.

Therefore, in terms of size, MAS is definitely not to be compared with. However, comfort and service wise, i would definitely prefer MH over SQ.

I hope MAS could one day get back into the black and start to climb back up to become a glory and one of SE Asia's largest airlines and of course, profitable one.

I think that MH has been struggling to fill up their aircraft, mainly because of the competition from two better known airlines, SQ and TG. These airlines are more well-known around the world than MH, however I would suspect MH have a stronger presence in Asia.

I remember once when I visited Egypt, the locals did not know where Malaysia was, but when asked if they know where Singapore is, they go "Ahhh.... Singapore... Yes, yes."

MAS try their best and they are getting better at what they do. Before you know it, MH may even be up there with the likes of SQ and TG.

MAS was once SE Asia's largest but is no longer. I said I hope it can become ONE of SE or even Asia's largest. That is not impossible. But I didn;t say the LARGEST. I think it is rather hard for MAS to surpass SIA in the next 5-10 years!

Although I have never flown them and see that everyone's happy with them, I would like to draw your attention to their last commercials: the music was great and those people in airports with their flight numbers were very well thought out! Plain and effective.
BA's world favourite airline is too egocentric and self assured.
AF's "faire du ciel le meilleur endroit de la terre" is very poetical.
AZ's "vi porteremo ovunque" (we'll get you anywhere) has a negative turn...

Ha ha ha - I liked that last AZ slogan. Malaysia Airlines has come up with a new philosophy - 'Going beyond expectations' - which is great. They certainly have gone beyond my expectations many times. Being a frequent flyer around Europe - you realise how robotic many airlines operate in this region (Not that that's a bad thing - after all efficiency is of value too) but MAS certainly adds a certain flair with their on-board service. In fact, I found Air France's service to be the best so far in Europe again probably because the cabin crew just seem so much more human.

I DO hope that Skyteam gets KLM, NWA, CO and MAS on-board soon. As an alliance they would certainly be a force to reckon with and perhaps then STAR would start getting some decent competition. It would also be good for KUL to become the Skyteam hub - a role I'm sure Malaysian Airports would be proud of too.

I do indeed hope that Skyteam gets KL, NW, CO as well. I think MAS should need to join an alliance pretty soon and feed more traffic into KUL. By that time, maybe AF will start flying into KUL again. After joining an alliance, I think MAS can benefit quite a lot from those transit traffic, I believe.

Furthermore, they can do the Enrich FFP a favour by adding more partner airlines into it. Currently it is only MH, KL, LX, VS as members. It was pretty useful for me while KE was still a partner before 1 July 2002. Now I seriously do not know what to do with my Enrich points...

They are a great airline to fly with. I just flew with them last Monday from Kuala Lumpur to Manchester on Business Class. Even in Business Class, it was pretty full, but then again, some of them are just lucky passengers like me, who got bumped up because MAS now practises overbooking. Their inflight service was superb, and at times, I didn't even need to press the call button and the flight attendant was at my side helping me out.

By the way, I was just wondering why did Korean Air quit Enrich FFP? Doesn't looks like MAS is getting closer to Skyteam to me. That's the only Skyteam carrier that MAS have some sort of relationship with. They still code-share on each other flights between Seoul-Incheon and Kuala Lumpur, but that's it I think. Besides, Korean Air's additional flight into Kuala lumpur does not carry MAS code in it as well.

MAS is now trying to get more passengers to transit at KLIA instead of other airport around the region. As I was collecting my luggage, I could see more baggage tags with KUL on it, i.e. passengers transitting at KUL and then flying onwards to Manchester. Besides the Manchester service is not only catered for students as I went down to the Economy cabin and found that about 60-70% of the passengers were in fact people from abroad, i.e. non-Malaysians.
