Air India And Air Canada In Codeshare Talks

Tue Sep 24, 2002 2:34 pm

Air India and Air Canada are in preliminary talks over a possible codeshare deal for traffic between Canada and India. The Indian Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain and the Canadian Transportation Minister David Collenette met last week in Ottawa and agreed to permit these kind of operations within the framework of the existing bilateral.

Tentatively, this would involve Air India putting their code on Air Canada's services to Toronto and Vancouver from Frankfurt and London Heathrow, with Air Canada being permitted to place their code upon Air India's services from Frankfurt and London to Delhi and Mumbai. At present there is no target timeframe for introducing this service, but it is expected for the winter 2003 season.

Looks like Air Canada ended up making friends with their "enemy".  Smile

Does Air India plans to use it's own aircraft for Canada operations, despite the code-share talks?

That's often the case, isn't it? While people argue about "their" airline on these boards, the carriers work behind the scenes on business agreements and end up being "friends".

Star Alliance had identified the Indian sub-continent as a hole in their system. This could be a first step toward filling that hole.

Does this mean AI won't be flying to Toronto themselves?

Cause I would love to see their 744's come here...

I have often wondered why there is not Air India or Air Canada service to India from YVR. Although I've learned from previous posts that population demographics are only part of the equation of routes and markets, the Vancouver metropolitan area supports a fairly extensive Indian population, many of whom do travel with some frequency between YVR and various cities in India.

Assuming that AI and AC are able to ink a deal, then I don't see AI returning on their own metal to Canadian soil for a few years at least. However, if no deal is forthcoming in the next few months, YYZ is shortlisted as one of the cities for AI's phase two North American expansion next winter (to be served through LHR, pending slots, or else FRA).

AI has taken a very smart but very conservative expansion strategy over the last few years that have turned the carrier into a relatively efficient and profitable airline. Don't expect that strategy to change, so any move back into the Canadian market will be only after testing the waters very gingerly.

Yvr74 That's an interesting question that, I believe, has more to do with airline finances.

The bilateral between India and Canada allows each country rights from Vancouver to India. Air India had the rights but not the money to start the service. Canadian Airlines had the rights but not the money to start the service. Canada 3000 got the rights but went bankrupt, in part because scheduled services are more expensive to operate than charter services.
