AA A300's: New Or Used? (+ TWA Airbusses)

Tue Sep 24, 2002 4:57 pm

Did AA purchase its A300's from Airbus brand new, or did they pick them up second hand? I have not seen much about their history.

On a side note, I was reading "Airbus" published by Motorbooks International, and it mentioned several times that TWA had placed an intent to order some A319s, and was interested in the A318 as well. It's a shame they didn't last long enough for us to see Airbusses in TWA colors!

AA's A300's were delivered new from the manufacturer. According to many sources, AA struck a very advantageous deal with Airbus, because they are allowed to return them to the manufacturer within very short notice and at no additional cost if the need should arise. Don't know about the lease payments, but I suppose that American got a pretty good deal here, too, because at that time, Airbus was very keen on getting additional customers in North America (well, that probably hasn't changed till today).

I am sure other posters will be able to further detail my information.

Afaik, AA's Airbusses are not leased, at least not from Airbus, or am I wrong?

I have read on this forum several times that AA wanted to show Boeing that the 767 is not the only solution for AA's needs, and so they ordered both the B767 and the A300. Not sure if this is the truth.

And talking about TWA's A318s: TWA wanted to order 100 jets (717 or 318). But neither Boeing nor Airbus were willing to accept an order for 100 aircraft from TWA as a launch customer - too much risk, the end of TWA would have endangered the future of whole aircraft type. So they had to split, ordered 50 717s and 50 318s I think. And indeed, only few TWA 717s were delivered, and I'm sure that AA cancelled TWA's A318 orders. Btw, were those A318 orders firm orders, or options?

American did leased, and then purchased A300s. Of the 35 A300-605Rs, AA owns 10, while 25 are on a '30-day walk-away lease'. 24 now, since Flight 587 went down. TWA had 50 717s & 50 A318s on firm order. 30 717-231s were assembled, the remainder cancelled, & no A318s were ever completed before AA bought out TWA. All of AA's A300s were brand new airframes. Regards.

i believe that AA orderd the A300 for its cargo capacity, which was neccesary on their latin american routes.

Thats right Doug. The 767 has a lower cargo capacity than the A300, and the A300 can take on bigger pallets in the cargo hold.

Wasn't the A318/A319 deal also because TWA had once ordered the A330-300 but then never took any and in order to save the penalty fee ordered the A32X?
I know that the story that neither Airbus nor Boeing wanted to sell 100 frames to TWA is also correct. Somehow they knew what was gonna happen to the airline soon after.
