Braniff: Believe What?

Wed Sep 25, 2002 3:29 am

Hi everyone,

This has been driving me crazy for years, maybe someone can help me out. At the end of most South Park episodes (not that I watch such vulgar programming  Big grin) is a 5 second clip of a computer generated Braniff 727 in the Braniff 2 scheme, with the phrase Braniff: Believe It! as it flys by.

Why is this used? What does it mean? What should I believe? Why is South Park using it?

"Q: What's with the Braniff Airlines bit at the end of each episode? Believe it?

A: I believe I've answered this before, but I'll do it again...for laughs. When Matt and Trey delivered the pilot to Comedy Central, they didn't have a bumper (you know, that card at the end of the show that tells you who created it).
Not having an appropriate company name or logo to use (Avenging Conscience notwithstanding), they tossed in the logo of Braniff Airlines - a defunct airline from the 60s and 70s - the music is the melody from "Cannibal." After the show aired, they were contacted by a company that owned the rights to the Braniff name and logo. An agreement was made to allow them the use of the logo on South Park broadcasts, but not on any other projects in the future.

Let that be a lesson to you kids. Always consult your lawyer."

Thanks, Accidentally. Do you know what Braniff was imploring us to believe? The fact they were still around? Did Braniff use this in their ads? Sorry for all the questions!

The first Braniff went under in 1982, and came back 2-3 yars later in the color scheme depicted at the end of the show.

If my memory serves, Braniff-2 used this "Braniff: Believe It!" slogan as a part of their relaunch, attempting to shed the negative aspects of the Braniff-1 experience from the longevity and potential good of the Braniff name. After Braniff-2 went under, they sure didn't try it with Braniff-3, which also went under.

All the above occurred before Southpark was a gleam in someone's eye....

The original 1984 slogan was The Best Low Fare in the Air - Believe It!

It was shortened after a few years when the Piedmont idiots took over to just Believe It!

This is kind of an offball question, but why does a Braniff 727 always appear at the end of "Southpark"?

Ex BN here. The first BN went under May 13, 1982. The relaunch of BN2 occured on March 1, 1984 with the slogan, "Were building the new Braniff around you." In November management switched when William Slattery left as president of the company and Ron Ridgeway took over. Fare structure went from full fare to discount airline, cities slashed from 21 down to 9, and the slogan, "Best low fare in the air was introduced in November of 1984, shorten to "Believe it," around 1986. Hyatt sold thier interest in BN in 1988 to a crook named Jeffery Chowdrow who along with a friend "Scott Spence," looted the company. BN ceased operations in September of 1989, resumed operations as BN 3 in July of 1991 with a retread slogan from the 70s, "Braniff gets you there with flying colors." Ceased operations in July of 1992. I gave up with BN2 and have been happy with CO since then.

Here is the jingle used with the "Believe it," slogan.

You can believe in Braniff, believe in what we do. Were proud to say were Braniff. Were proud to be serving you. Were hard at work, to be the best, from coast to coast and to all the rest. You can believe in BRANIFF!

727LOVER,

Jeff CHowderhead appointed Bill McGee and a bunch of other loose cannons from Piedmont to ru(i)n the airline.

They bought Florida Express and their stellar fleet (BAC 111), moved the hub and HQ from DFW to MCO, ordered 17 or so F100's and picked up the Pan Am order for 320's and expanded faster than their finances allowed.

Well thanks for the clarification Braniff727. I was at a loss about Piedmont using "Believe It!" It is very true that PI unloaded it's deadwood management to BN2 in the mid 80s. Hyatt was not a good company to run an airline.

LOBBY TIME! I still wait for WN to have a "Spirit of the Braniff Brothers" paint scheme. Classless fools.

If wishes were horses, I'd be walking.
