Qantas Spending $25bn On Aircraft & Improvements?

Thu Sep 26, 2002 3:14 pm

Here is a link to an article where Qantas will spend at least $13 billion and is considering spending up to $25 billion on improvements such as new international and domestic aircraft.

http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,5170007%255E462,00.html

The article also discusses a $2 billion dollar upgrade to the QantasLink fleet over a 10 year period.

I know there have been previous topics discussed concerning this issue, but is there any news, rumours or speculation as to who may win the contract?

I should also commend Qantas as they seem to be growing & growing. They have launched a new carrier (Australian Airlines), cabin upgrades & recent talk about persuing equity deals in Europe, Asia & the US. This probably would not have occured had Ansett not folded.

MEA,

a lot of the funds are already committed to the A330/744ER/A380/738 received or on order. I think they have options on 738s to have an eventual fleet of 75.
The regional fleet competition seems to be between the Emb 70-95 seat family and more 717s to replace the 17 146s. Maybe a combo of both. The 717s seem to be very popular and are operating successfully for QFlink.
Other monies need to be spent on cabin refurbishment, SYD domestic terminal extensions and possibly a 25% equity stake in AirNZ.
With options taken up(and i am guessing a bit here as QF hasn't announced these details), they could end up with 30-odd A330s, around 12 744ERs and 24 A380s. I have basically doubled the firmly ordered aircraft as a rule of thumb.
Things can change quickly though, as acknowledged by Dixon himself. QF is now in a position to react quickly to fluctuations in their operations.
I don't know how many billions this adds up to but it is quite a few.

Dale.

Perhaps QF will order a large number of A330's to replace all the B763's which could leave the fleet for Australian Airlines should that venture prove to be a success.

The regional jet order is to happen in conjunction with British Airways, or is this no longer the case given QF's closer relationship with AA?

For those that may be interested, rumour has it that QF will may order the Embraer 170 regional jet.
