Way To Get A Really Cheap Fare?

Fri Sep 27, 2002 8:33 am

This may sound stupid to you, but I really want to take a long trip by air and turn around and come back once I get there and get to see the airport a little bit. I really want a huge trip. What a friend of mine and I want to do is do a roundtrip from ATL (our home city) to SIN and back. I am planning on getting a job soon because being 15, I am old enough to work at a few places. That way I can get the money for this and other things. I need some help finding a good fare though. I don't expect a fare of $300, but maybe closer to $600. My dates are totally flexible, just as long as I have a long weekend that weekend, or it is summer time next year and I do not have to worry about being at school. The days of the week that I travel do not matter. The only thing is that I either fly there and turn around and come home on the next available flight, or I spend a night in Singapore outside of the airport. What I mean by that is that I actually spend a night in Singapore. Not arrive on a flight at 11:30 p.m. and leave on a 6:00 a.m. flight. That would be fine, but only with the first scenario of just coming and turning around. The airline does not matter. Could you help me at all? The best I can find is $784 and I would have to stay for three days, which my mom would NEVER let me do at this age in a faraway country. I don't even know if she will let me do this, but she has not turned it down yet. Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it!

Why not travel as an Air Courier? Do you remember the episode where Bart Simpson of the cartoon "The Simpsons" wanted to go home from an extebded joyride, but had no money. Bart worked as an Air Courier to deliver a liver to HongKong, and a crate with his friends inside to Springfield. I think in rela life you need to be 18 to work as an Air Courier, so you have a few years to wait . http://www.courier.org/q&a.php.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Firstly, you will need a passport . . .

Have you tried traveling domestically yet? I believe that Air Tran offers student fares from ATL. It's not long haul, but it's a start.

ATL/SIN would involve a connection and planning to get the best fare. Mom, would need to know where you are too . . . if only for her own piece of mind.

Poll the airlines, search, search, search. Every airline will quote a fare, pick dates and compare. I suggest travel insurance, and again a nod from your Mom. Remember most airlines will now "more than ponder" cash, so you will undoubtedly need an adult to actually pay for the tickets.

Happy trails . . . I'll look forward to your trip report.

This is something Ive pondered doing too, however I think its not feasible due to customs...they would find it very funny for you to go halfway around the world and back in the same day with no baggage...not a good idea...plus Id guess that ATL-SIN r/t is at least about $800 or so at the cheapest...start saving...

Try http://www.hotwire.com.

Or you can try http://ual.com for your flight to SIN. I think it's around the $650 mark to SIN from ORD, and it's a non-Efare. There is however a 6 day minimum stay.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Every now and then Delta will advertise $400ish fares on their website to Europe. You might keep your eyes open for these. In fact, Delta has a $345 fare ATL-LGW right now!

Thank you everyone for your help! I don't have my heart set only on SIN. I'll take what comes up and seems interesting. The passport thing isn't an issue. I have been to Europe several times, so already have one. I hadn't thought about customs though. Would I really have to deal with them though if I never left the airport because I would just be constantly connecting, which when you are connecting in at least some countries, you do not need to clear customs? Even if I did get arrested, I committed no crime, so in the end it should be okay, just getting home a bit late (a few days late maybe, but oh well). Correct me if I'm wrong on that stuff though!

I'm pretty sure you'd be going through the customs procedures even if you are connecting. At least in your home airport of Atlanta, the concourse is set up so that you go through customs/immigration before connecting passengers can even get to their connecting gate.

In all due respect . . . your plans need a lot more thought. You take being arrested lightly?

In any country, you will have to clear customs/immigration, nothing connects endlessly!

Seriously, take a cheap flight and enjoy a day out . . . most, if not all hotels will require you to be 18 to check in. Otherwise, save up a little more and treat Mom . . . she can go her way, and you yours . . . surprise her!

Have fun, and remember that trip report!

Sorry about sounding like I take arrest lightly. I absolutely DO NOT, if I did something wrong. The thing is though that I wouldn't have done anything wrong, so although unpleasant for the time being, it probably would not be that big of a problem in the end. What would happen though? I am just basing that upon what I think, not what I know, so if you are familiar with what happens when you are detained by customs in Europe or countries like Singapore or China (Hong Kong area, not normal part) I know I would have to clear customs in ATL, if that was where I reentered the US. That is the only airport I can remember entering the US in. The three of my trips to Europe had the flights from Europe to ATL. The other customs time was when I was four weeks old and that was in MIA coming from the Turks and Caicos. I obviously don't remember that. One year ago, I took a trip to Greece and flew SR through ZRH. I didn't have to do any customs either way, just security, but nothing more. During this summer, I went on a school trip to Spain and France and we flew to BCN through LGW and I only had to go through security in LGW as well. I flew back nonstop from CDG and the first time I went to Europe was to BRU, and both of those flights were nonstop (ATL-BRU-ATL). I was just thinking, that depending on the countries visited, it might just be that procedure until I arrived in the US again. I probably sound very teenagerly like in this post; sorry. Thank you so much though for your help!
