Do You All Like Economy After You Have Flown F?

Fri Sep 27, 2002 12:01 pm

I have never flown out of economy throughout my 15 years. I started flying at 4 weeks old. I'm not complaining at all though! I have had some great flying experiences, including some transatlantic flights that were the best I've ever had. The thought of flying gets me really excited, even though I know it is always in economy. The longer the flight, the better in my mind. Now for those of you who have flown before or fly a lot in first class or business, does the thought of flying in economy make you cringe, especially for a long flight, or is still flying to you, no matter what class it is in? Sorry if this question is sort of stupid, but I hear a lot of "Well, it was a good flight even though I was in economy," sort of stuff in posts, so I was wondering.

I would say yes, you do in a way cringe when the thought enters your head.
I for one don't like to ride in a middle seat, I am a non-rev so I will take anything I can get. I know we all have stories to tell and some are bad. I have been in coach in a center seat from ORD-CDG and even NRT-LAX, but I had a seat.
I went first class to PEK via ORD and that was even a long flight, I am going with my wife in October. I told her that if we get coach we are going to Europe. I wont fly 13 hrs and 45 min. In coach. That may sound bad but you asked. If it is a 777 then I will ride it in the center to France but I cant do it to china.

I have been flying in J for the past 3 years or so and everytime I go to the Economy seats, I cringe. When I flew SIN-FCO 4 months ago, I nearly didn't get a J seat, so I was really unhappy about spending 12 hours stuck in a narrow seat.

Luckily they upgraded me at the gate.

I've only flown First Class a few times. Either someone else was paying for it, or I was upgraded, or I used miles to upgrade. Even if I was a millionaire, I would never pay to fly first class. For one thing, I don't think the extras you get in F is worth the huge difference in price. I would rather fly economy and use the money I saved to stay in a luxury suite. Also, I am not really a big person (I'm only 5'10" and weigh 160 lbs) so I don't find economy all that uncomfortable.

I like to be comfortable when I fly, and usually that means I wear jeans. When I wear jeans and fly first class, I usually get looks from the other F passengers like I don't belong. Coach suits me just fine, thank you very much.

I'm at the point where if I don't get First or Business and get a meal service, I just stay home. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

On short domestic flights I much prefer an exit-row in economy with no one next to me than a first or business class seat next to someone who wants to chat. Internationally, give me business or give me death.
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

I have a rule of thumb:
less than 4 hours I can fly economy, more I fly business, be it for work ( paid by the company) or be it leisure ( when I pay for my own biz seat).

Economy for me is more bearable on long flights when there is at least an empty seat close to me: I can stretch my legs and dump on the other sear magazines, blankets and all my amenities, without having to carry them in my lap. I still think in amazement how I survived ( I was younger) 13 and a half hours on CX in economy, not anymore for me, thank you.

When I upgrade to first, I look back at business and cringe. Once you are used to the best is difficult to go back. I understand that you can use the money for a better accomodation, but for me flying is such a pleasure that IT IS part of my holiday or one of the few pleasant things to look forward too on a business trip

Most of my flights are in first. But, I don't find coach horrible or anything like that. Just like the extra room of first.

I have to agree with UAL Bagsmasher. If I don't get F I don't like to go. There is nothing worse than getting stuck next to a drunk old lady in coach in a middle seat on a cross country flight (I know from experience IAD-LAX on a 747-400) Crying

Unless you are flying international long-haul, there is really very little difference now between First/Business and Coach. First of all, First is almost ALWAYS full of either upgrades or non-revs, so your chances of getting an empty seat next you are practically nil. Maybe they should start calling it "Upgrade Class." You can't even escape the crying babies anymore! Second of all, meal service has been cut to the point that you often will get the same service as in the main cabin, except your Coke is in glass instead of plastic, and the pretzels are served from a wicker basket. I've gotten to where I often prefer Coach...an exit row has more leg room than First Class, and you have a better chance of having an empty row. On a flight more than 6 hours long (especially overnight) yes, the upgrade is worth it...but First Class on a domestic flight is a waste of money/miles.

Greetings:

Do I like sitting in the middle row between two people on a transcon flight after I've flown first, Hell NO I don't like it!. I've flown First a few times either on upgrades courtesy of the carrier, using my miles, or paying for an upgrade. Most of the time I fly coach and I really don't mind economy that much if I get a good seat, that's why I arrive at the airport two to three hours before departure if I'm flying coach. Every time I have I've gotten a great seat in economy. Plus I don't mind spending time watching the planes while sipping down a cold one.

Regards
Tom

anyone remember that episode of Seinfeld where they have one first class and one coach seat, and Jerry tells Elaine something like "I've flown FC before, you don't know how good it is...I can't go back, I won't"

Thats kind of how I feel, If I have been flying alot in coach recently, then I dont find it too bad. If I have been flying J/F then it seems alot worse. I think my limit for coach would be about 8 hrs...

Airplanetire,

I've flown both Business and Economy long haul to Europe, and I must say that to me, it's the difference between night and day. Coach is nothing less than torture on 8+hour flights; especially when you get stuck in the middle seat. However, if you're lucky enough to get 2 or 3 seats to yourself so you can stretch out, it's not so bad. In fact, sometime I prefer to have an empty seat next to me in coach than to be seated next to someone in domestic first; but on international, I always prefer at least business class. I just recline my seat back 160 degrees, cover up in a real blanket, enjoy the gormet food, drink all the champaign they'll serve me, and sleep like a baby and enjoy being in heaven. Hope you enjoy your trip to Europe, and let me know how it goes...

Flew PIT-CDG on US 767... Coach was fine, now complaints.. I think if you are on a flight for this long it doesn't matter where you sit, you will still want to get up and stretch every once in a while..

I dont mind Y on a shorter flight (up to 3 hrs) and the loads are light. But for trans cons and international if I cant get First Class or J. I dont go. Just this past March I waited and extra two hours to get First out of CDG back to the west coast.

I was actully just thinking about this.
On August 24 of this year, I flew F class on AA from LGA-ORD and had an excellent experiance all around.
Then on September 20 also of this year, I took a similar flight (6 hours earlier) but on the same route in coach. I wasn't upset or fazed by my downgrade in the least. I still enjoyed the flight very much and have no problems flying coach.
