North American Carriers To Spain

Sun Sep 29, 2002 6:44 am

This is in reference to the post "Northwest to Spain - New Service" and is in regards to a question that I have had for several years. I would have posted under the mentioned post, but didn't want to deviate from the thread.

I wouldn't say Spain is underserved because first of all, I have no idea what that word really entails or what the demand for travel from North America to Spain is. However, in comparison to many other major European cities such as London, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, etc., Spain seems to have relatively few services from North America by North American carriers.

If what I've read and heard is correct, Spain is Europe's largest tourist destination and has been termed "the playground of Europe." I have also been told by a person or two that "Europe goes to Spain for holiday." I don't assert that as a fact or even an opinion, since I honestly have no idea if that is correct. However, if that is true, it makes the situation even more curious.

Any thoughts or reasons that members know of why this situation exists with the services between North America and Spain?

Yields probably. There are a lot of business travelers going between Spain and both Miami and New York City, but that is it. The current North America-Spain Market (all daily):

NW: DTW-MAD (May 2003)
DL: JFK-MAD (summer), JFK-BCN (summer), JFK-MAD-BCN (winter), ATL-MAD, ATL-BCN (summer)

As well Iberia has:
MIA-MAD (2x daily), JFK-MAD, ORD-MAD, MEX-MAD, MAD-SJU-SDQ-MAD, MAD-HAV; and the provide A319 service from Miami to GUA, SAP, SAL, CUN, PTY, MGA, and SJO that feed MIA-MAD flights but also carry O&D traffic.

That's an interesting thought, Yvr74. I'm not sure if the demand for travel to Spain from N. America calls for more flights. You mentioned that Spain is the vacation destination for Europeans, however people from N. America may not be traveling as much to Spain as other places like London, Paris, Amsterdam, etc.
