Great Day Of LGA Spotting

Mon Sep 30, 2002 2:26 am

Saturday at about 12:30 I met up with seasoned a.net photographer Tom Turner for a photo session from my favorite spotting location.....the dock.

My little dock across from Flushing Bay from La Guardia is jsut great. It's private, open and gives you a great view of most airport activity.

Tom and I found a great spot there yesterday on top of a wall, which was taller, sturdier, and more comfortable than the abandoned tractor I used to stand on right next to the dock. It was great.

The palces were landing on Expressway Visual 31, so they were coming over our heads, some planes close to 50 feet away.

We were there for several hours, with Mr. Turner snapping away with his D60, even letting me take a few shot of....oh boy.....an ATA 737-800. If they came out well, they will be uploaded onto the site (maybe my first a.net pictures!).

We saw 2 Delta 767s, lots more private jets than I usually see at LGA, and we even saw AA's 737 with their old school paint scheme. It was outrageous.

We even had a good wind which gave us some nice crosswind shots and some bouncy landings. I even used a picket tool to cut down a small tree to open up the view of a taxiway to get pics of lineups.

With weather the previous night that made us concerned abotu whether or not we'd even be able to meet up, we ended up getting a day of spotitng that was jsut about as perfect as it could get. Beautiful clear weather with a nice crosswind, great runway usage, finding a new spot, with a great guy liek Tom Turner and his great camera, I couldn't think of how it could get bettter (pertianing to aviation at least, some women and beer would have been cool though lol).

A great day, for which I give Tom Turner a big thank you. I hope you all get to see the pics we took yesterday in the near future.

Sounds like a terrific spot - is it on your own property, or public?

Hey Guys,

I'm still jealous. I trekked out to JFK yesterday to spot from Good'ol Terminal 1....saw my favorite airline pass the majority of the t/o line to a departure on 13R.

Sorry to have missed the day! Sounds awesome. How far is it from our dock?

Be careful and don't fall over the wall, Humpty!

Mirrodie, it's jsut about 20 feet to the left of the tractor, about 5 feet higher or so. You'll love it.

Prosa, it is on private property owned by a construction company. If you're inteerested in going, email me and I'll escort you through.

Bigphil, one of these days I'm going to email you on my next trip out to NY for a spotting session (since I regularly visit my sis up in Yonkers). You keep talking about these docks and am axious to check it out.  Big thumbs up
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Yes folks, this dock is awesome. I go so far as to say that I think it is better than going to Planeview PArk next to runways 4 on the other side of the airport.

Yea, the dock is better than planeview park, b/c you get an overview of the whole airport. The only thing about planeview park is that they come in almost at eye level, where as at the dock they're still about 50 feet up.

Flyguy, I go every other day. It's a 5 minute walk from my house.
