China Airlines Inclined To Buy Boeing (747s)

Mon Sep 30, 2002 4:09 pm

China Airlines has said that it is inclined to buy Boeing 747s to replace the long-haul fleet.

"For long-haul airplanes, we are leaning towards 744s (747-400s)." Roger Han said the plan to buy 12 A300-600Rs has not been finalised. He also did not say how many planes would be bought.

After pressure from the U.S.A., China Airlines is likely to buy 10 Boeing 747-400s and 12 Airbus A330s says the AWSJ.

To replace the A300-600Rs already at China Airlines, either the A330 or the Boeing 777 will be purchased. "For the replacement of A300-600Rs, we will only pick one type under the principle of simplifying our fleet," Han added.

The final deal is expected to be announced at the end of 2002.

2 Wrong info.

1. CI is likely to sign LOI for 6 to 8 B744, not 10.
2. CI is buying 12 A330-300, not A300-600R. Your "Press Release" contridicts itself.

Better check for the "real info" before posting press release.

Bigo747, here is what I got from their site:

The Asian Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that, after apparent pressure from U.S. lawmakers, China Airlines was likely to order eight to 10 Boeing 747s as well as 12 Airbus A330s.

Now it could be not true, but that is what the site ir reporting.

Khoa Huynuk, I take back my comments regarding the 747-400 order. But I won't take back my 2nd comment, because the article still contricts itself.

Chinatimes today reported that China Airlines is LIKELY to order 8-10 B747-400 (model unknown).

By the way, how can you buy A300-600R to replace the A300-600Rs? That's still a contridiction.

First off, it never even says they are buying more A300-600R...that would be ridiculous if they did anyways...my question is: It says in the article that average age of the A300s is 9 years...why are they retiring them (and generally airliners as a whole)? NW has DC-9s that are over 30 years old! Is it just to minimize a/c diversity? I can't imagine buyign new planes could be more expensive than the maintnence of ones originally owned...

China Airlines spokesperson says that China Airlines haven't make any final decision, but it's likely to get more 744, as "it's the best choice for the airline".

WSJ reports that this order is a "dirty battle".

Also...

The 744 are likely to be Freighter, according to past interviews.

But China Airlines is also "mad" at Boeing for "forcing to sell planes".

"Taiwan's China Airlines, the island's largest carrier, has decided to buy 10 747-400s from Boeing Co and 12 Airbus A330-300s in a deal estimated at about US$4 billion..."

Hi all,

I would expect 2-4 744ERs for the JFK-TPE nonstop; currently, the 744 can only do it only in one direction.
