Brussels Spotters Meeting + Convention

Wed Oct 02, 2002 12:05 am

Hi guys,

The coming saturday (05/10), there is a convention at Brussels of people who want to sell or exchange their airline stuff.

You can buy or exchange safetycards, aircraft miniatures,...

Also our famous a.net members MD-11er and A330DAT will be there to show their stuff  Big thumbs up  Big thumbs up

Anyway, what do you guys think of this scenario: go to the Convention in the morning, and go to the 25L spotters area in the afternoon?

Here is a route transcription to the convention:
place: Atheneum Zaventem-Kortenberg, located on the Spoorwegstraat ( Railwaystreet), in the center of Zaventem, very close to the BRU airport.

Hope to see you guys there!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Best regards,
Frederic

Hi Fred,

This a very nice idea, I will see until what time the convention last. If it's already finished at 3 or 4 pm I will join you at the Watertower unless of course they use the 02.

But see you for sure at the convention.
It starts at 10 am.

See you Saturday.

Hey Frederic,

Indeed, very good idea. Sad thing is that I have an important test on Monday, so I won't be able to come the whole day, but I think I will come to the convention. So if you need a ride from the airport to the convention, you just let me know  Smile

Best regards,

Hi guys,
I'll be paying a visit on Saturday at the convention. Depending the weather and interesting visitors at the airport, my stay will be long or short. Does anybody know the exact hours of the convention ?

I have really thought about to join you guys there, I searched on some websites for flights but the cheapest same day return fare from DUS to BRU was about 354 Euro (KL via AMS). Too bad that SNBA does not fly from BRU to DUS like Sabena have done it, I am sure that a nonstop flight were way cheaper. Soon I am allowed to fly on ID tix, than it will be no problem to come for a day to BRU!

I hope he reads this before he flies to Africa tomorrow Big grin

Anyway, I think you already had to reserve your tables. The price to entry is 2,5 € BTW.

@Karl:

I think from 10am to 5 pm.

Anyway, much traffic or not, the dead moments can be filled in den Jumbo Big grin

@Patrick:

Sad you can't come to BRU  Sad

Is it possible to go via FRA with LH and EW? Or with EW to FRA, and than with Delsey Airlines / Ibertrans to BRU?

Just some info for the spotters: together with Sabena's receiver i am preparing something really nice.

We currently make a selection of the more than 45.000 pictures from the Sabena archives. The result will be published in a book that will appear next month (7 november!). Guys, it's really amazing what i have discovered in these photo albums: from 1923 till 2001 all aircraft, pics of the mechanics, of the VIPS that have flown Sabena, of the airfields, of the check-in, of the kitchens, the cabin crew evolution, the Congo flights with the DC 6, pics of the upper bar in the 747, pics of the royal family, pics from animal transport, pics from special cargo loads, ... You tell it, it's all there.

I think I am allowed to anounce it here because we don't have commercial intentions. It's a volunteer job and part of a project to protect these archives!!!! Hopefully the Belgian government will buy this amazing collection because it's our aviation history!!!

Hi Guys,

The convention will take place from 10.00 till 17.00, entrance is at the price of 2,5 euro, the tables at 15 euro. Food and beverages will be available at low price.

If you want to have more info, the email address of the person in charge is:
safetyfan@hotmail.com

Pressclub, what about giving away the book for nothing in honor of all the ex-SN employees iso selling it like you did with your prior book.
Making money is apparently an important stuff for some persons or does it start from good intentions?
What I doubt!

MD-11er, we are all aware that publishing a book with multi-coloured pictures is an investment that can easily run into several thousands of euros. Therefore, I don't see how you can give away such publication just for free, unless you can find a generous sponsor.

The only way to give all the ex-SN employees (and the public in general) free access to these interesting SN archives is by putting these pictures on the internet (just like Airliners.net is doing).

> Making money is apparently an important stuff for some persons

Money is of course an important issue, although it should indeed be secondary to good intentions.

If you're talking about this new book, Pressclub wrote "...there is no margin on it. So cost price is sell price...". That sounds fair to me (from a customer viewpoint)!

Talking about money. You may get into the convention for 2,5 €. However, you may need another 25€ or even 250€, if you want to put something nice in your shopping cart! These aviation goodies tend to be quite expensive (sigh).

Hi guys,

Wow, what a nice initiative. I think I'll be able to make it. If I remember correct, I have to go to (another) weddig that day, but I think we're only invited for the evening party, so I just might be able to bother you guys the whole day  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I just mailed to safetyfan@hotmail.com for a correct address (you know, route-planner and stuff...).

So, this meeting starts at 10AM, right?

Pressclub:

Whole cow, how nice...I'm really anxious to see all those pictures... Do you know if it will be available in the normal book stores, or do we have to (pre) order it somewhere? I'm not sure of this (since you stated that cost price= selling price), but if you can get some sort of discount, let me know this time  Smile/happy/getting dizzy (not that I think the other one was too expensive or so, not at all)

MD 11'er,

I thought I was clear: it has nothing to do with making money... We just thought we had to do it to confront people with the problem of the archives, to give all belgian aviation addicts an opportunity to see what Sabena was all about for almost 80 years, ...

So i think we only have 'good' intentions. It's not commercial at all.

Established, you understood it

I'm also planning to attend that convention, it takes me a half hour to drive there from where I live. I was there last year. Every year, somebody sends me a letter by mail about that convention, his name is Oliver Lamoral. It was in the Airways magazine five or six years ago, that's how I know him, I mean that's how I knew about the airliner convention held every year in Brussels.
I hope to see you all there.  Smile

Hey guys,

I just talked with my buddy Sebastian (Herbman) and we decided to come to BRU by car on Saturday because the same day return fares are too high.

Frederic, I will send you an eMail this evening or tomorrow, there we can agree on a meeting point at BRU.

I am looking forward to Saturday

Sabena332 you're welcome any time

 Big thumbs up

The drive from Dusseldorf to Brussels is only two hours.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

In case you've never been here or for those who are interested, the quickest way from DUS is the highway that passes by the city of Liege (E40), 3 lanes most of the way, not the highway that goes through part of holland (Maastricht) and the city of Hasselt (A2), 2 lanes. Not to be mistaken you take the highway south of Aachen.

When you reach Brussels, follow the signs to the airport: Zaventem.

When reaching the airport, do not go over the bridge that goes to the terminals. stay right, next to the bridge. Under the bridge is a roundabout. When reaching the roundabout, you turn right.

Then you will be driving on the main road through the town of Zaventem. There will be another roundabout and you will end up going left (follow the main traffic flow), you cross over the railway bridge. It's the first street on your left and the school is immediately to your right.

Damn, I forgot Sebastian! Big grin So also thanks for coming, Sebastian  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thanks for the very usefull route description, A330DAT!

But maybe I have another suggestion: I have to come by train to BRU. This is my suggestion: at what time do we see you there, Patrick and Sebastian? I know you have to get up very quick, but what do you think of being at 8am at Brussels? Than we can do some spotting at the 25L area (or 02 if they use 02). Than you will see Delsey Airlines etc. landing.

At 10 'o clock, Tom will already be at the 25L area (isn't it Tom?), and so we all can proceed to the convention.

I don't know where it exactly is, but with the route description of A330DAT, it will not be a problem. I think, following his description, that I already was there in the neighbourhood, so it will not be a problem.

The drive from Dusseldorf to Brussels is only two hours

Is this based on a normal speed (of let's say 130km/h), or is this based on the speed you and MD-11er go to FRA and DUS? Big grin (so let's say 200km/h) Big grin?

I ask this because, if Patrick and Sebastian don't drive as fast as you do in the car, that they will need 3 hours to come to BRU, and so I will have one hour to wait at the airport.

See you all there Big grin

Frederic

Hey guys!

Sorry for my late reply but I just woke up because I had a few beers too much yesterday, good that we have a public holiday in Germany today Big grin

A330DAT: Thanks a lot for the driving instruction, since we realized that BRU is only 2 hours away from DUS we decided to come by car.

Frederic: I hate it to travel by train because they are always late and too expensive, we will come by car. I think that we will arrive at 10am at BRU (we want to start here between 7:30am and 8am) and believe us, we drive always as fast as possible Big grin.

Hi Patrick,

You misunderstood one thing: I will come by train to the airport. But I will be there already at 8 o' clock. I will meet Tom there at 8'o clock, and I go with him to the 25L spotters area. I will mail you my gsm number, and when you are approaching Brussels, send me an sms, and I will come to the departure area of the airport. There I will wait untill you and Sebastian arrive. From there, we can (together with Tom) proceed to the Convention. After the convention, we can go to the 25L area to do some spotting (and if you want, there is a VERY good pub there Big grin)

Finding the way to the airport is more easy I think than finding the way to 25L or the convention I think  Smile

@AirOrange: it is not always easy to announce a meeting weeks in advance. Sad you cannot come.

Frederic

Hi Patrick,

The planns have slightly changed, but it will make no difference for you.

Tom can't come to BRU saturday  Sad He has an important test of maths, and this is more important of course than a spottersday.

Anyway, good luck Tom!! We will keep our thumbs up!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I come to the airport by train, and I arrive at 10 'o clock.

Can you describe your car please, Patrick?

You can come to the 'departures' area, I will be there from 10am. I will look out for your car, give you a sign if I see you, jump into the car and so we can proceed to the convention.

If you pass by, and you don't see an aviation addict  Big grin, please make some tours around the roundabout (every time the same way), untill I am there. If I would be delayed, I will send you an sms. Do you do the same please?

Best regards,
Frederic

Hi Frederic!

Too bad that Tom can not join us on the meeting but you are correct, a test of maths is more important.

We will arrive with Sebastian`s car, a silver Seat Cordoba. We will park in front of the departure area and than we call you up from there, I just received the eMail with your mobile phone number. Of course we call you also (or send you an SMS) when we will arrive later there but I think that we will be there around 10am.

I am looking forward to Saturday

Hi guys,

I will be at the 25L area (or 02 if they use this runway) already from 8 'o clock. So if there are others who want to get up very quick, feel free to join Big grin

@Patrick:
Nothing of our appointment changes. You send me an sms 15 minuts before you arrive, than I come by car (with one, probably with 2 friends) to the departure area (normally with a red Alfa Romeo 33). There we will meet up, and go to the convention.

Louis Philippe (one of the two people in the car) has not seen a VG Airlines yet, and because it will be one of his last chances (they are really doing bad), we will try to be back at 25L at 12.35h to see the landing of OO-SFS from LA.

Hi guys, me again.

A VG Airlines will arrive at about 12h35 STA? Cewl, I want to catch one of these on my new digital before they go out of business (I hope they will survive, but yesterday the Belgian press made some bad predictions about them :-( )

So, I'll probably arrive at the convention first, stay there untill like 12h00 or so, and then I'll probably head to 25L (or whichever runway that will be used for arriving aircraft) to catch VG Airlines.

Only thing is: my min. is about 110, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to catch her in full profile, but I'll do my best...I'll just go and stand back as far as possible  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

See you guys tomorrow probably...(don't kill me if something else comes up, but I don't think anything will).

Apuneger - A 110mm for the touchdown zone may not be enough but if you go to the water tower at the end of the runway, you could get a little closer. It shouldn't be a problem.

The Delsey (VG) arrivals for tomorrow are at 9:30 (from Boston and New York) OO-SFQ and at 12:35 (fron Los Angeles) OO-SFS. Both aircraft in the VG Airlines colors.

A330DAT:

I think you may have misunderstood me: ~110mm (75mm x 1,6) is my MINIMUM, since I only have a 75-300mm at this moment (my 28-200mm hasn't arrived yet).

But anyway, I've managed to borrow one of my friends' lenses, so I should be able to get the aircraft full frame in profile. I just don't want to shoot it 3/4 (you know), and zoom out just to see I've fully zoomed out and the aircraft still won't fit...

Well, anyway, see you guys tomorrow probably. I'll check this thread once more tonight.

Hi guys,

Ivan: 110mm is not enough! You will need certainly 200mm if you want a side shot.

If you want a shot like this:

you will have enough with 180mm.

110mm only will be too much if you really want to catch the aircraft from the landing lamps there (you know what I mean).

I will have a look at the sabena site and if special visitors come up, I will post them here.

Frederic

Patrick, I can assure you that if an older generation B747 comes in, and if you are under the spot of the picture you showed, that it gives a kick that you will feel for a very long time!!

I once had it with an Air Hongkong B742F, and an MS B743. They were landing on the 02, they are even lower there! I was so excited that I still felt the kick hours after it happened!!

Regards,
Frederic

That sounds very good. I do not only watch the planes, I am also listening to them and some old 747 are perfect because they are very loud. Now I am looking really forward to tomorrow.

I am glad that the spots are located in front or near the runway, observation decks are also nice but I like it more when the planes are flying over me in a low altitude.

Hi guys, me again back from (interim) work,

Tomorrow I'll try to get at the convention between 10h00 and 11h00 (unless the interim job office calls me).

On the other hand, there is a small possibility that I'll be heading directly to the 25L spot, to take pictures. I just don't want to miss the Delsey Airlines aircraft, no way! And you know how things can go: aircrafts arriving 1 hour before STA or even ETA...And yes, digital allows one to take an almost unlimited amount of shots  Laugh out loud

Apuneger - Why would you want to take a picture of the Delsey aircraft in Brussels when you can shoot it at Frankfurt next week when Delsey will operate flights for Air Namibia while their 747-400 is in maintenance in Amsterdam? My hunch is it's Delsey, I could be wrong.

Weather for Brussels tomorrow Saturday:

Some clouds in the morning, clouding over in the afternoon with light to heavy rain at times and a temperature of 17C. Wind from the Southwest becoming West, Runways in use: 25L and 25R.

A330DAT:

Well, that's just because I live much close to BRU than to FRA...  Laugh out loud

Anyway: latest update on my plans: since I'll probably have to go to the wedding after all (bummer, huh?) (so I'll have to be home by 2PM), this means that I'll probably gonna try to take as manu shots as possible tomorrow--> spend the whole morning at 25L neighbourhood probably  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The other thing is, suppose I see sooooo many things on the convention that I would like to buy --> I probably wouldn't be able to resist the temptation--> loss of sooooo much money  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
