How long before they are completely merged with JAL?

They will be fully merged on 1-April, 2004. At that time, international flights will fall under Japan Airlines International. Domestic will be Japan Airlines Japan, Cargo is Japan Airlies Cargo, and sales is JAL Sales.
On 1-Apr, 2003 their reservation systems, mileage systems, and route tie-ups will be fully merged.
On 2-Oct, 2002 the sales division of JAS was folded into JAL Sales.
On 1-Oct, 2002 the parent company was listed on the stock exchange.

There were big 2-page ads in the morning papers in Japan today.

What happens to JAS' aircraft then? Will the A300s be phased out since it has no commonality with JAL's fleet?

I don't think the A300s will be going anytime soon. The Chairman (President) of the new company has indicated that future fleet plans will include both Airbus and Boeing. JAL will not want to spend all that money to replace A300s with 767s now. This merger is about cutting costs. The benefits of fleet commonality could be wiped out by a fleet replacement.

Fleet rationalization could be introduced in 2004, when JAL-JAS completes merger.

JAL is likely to go for 737NG, since it's unit have 734, while JAS has MD's.
A300 could ended up leaving with some newbie 767.

They should order the 764 when they do get the cash...
