Best Choise: BA 777 Or Swiss MD11.

Wed Oct 02, 2002 7:39 pm

Hi!

I have a reserve to fly in December from LIS to SFO via LHR with BA. We'll fly LIS/LHR on a 757 and LHR/SFO on a 777. Meanwhile a friend of mine said he'll find out with SWISS if I have a better fare and the flights will be LIS/ZRH on a A321 and ZRH/LAX on a MD11. I know that in the 777 we'll have PTV's and the time will fly, how about SWISS MD11? In a enthusiast way I would preffer the MD11 because soon they'll gonne but I have a family with me and I don't if they're willing to drop a better entretained flight to a more enthusiastic point of view, well unless the fare is a great deal of course!
I wait your feedback!

For nostalgia, I would go with the LX MD11. However, I would go with the BA 777 because there is the PTV and an overall better product presentation. Service is rather mediocre too on the new Swiss.

For nostalgic reasons, take the MD11. If you want PTV, then take BA B777. I don't know their product, but I like the SWISS product overall (eco-class, at least, I don't know others Smile/happy/getting dizzy).

BAs 777 didn´t impress me when I flew with it, I would take the Swiss MD-11, they won´t be around much longer.

Never flew with Swiss MD11, only Swissair but they didn't change a lot, if they did at all. The service with Swiss is actually very nice, except that there are only PTVs in BA 777. I don't know BA 777 so I can't compare but I would go on Swiss since the M11 will leave LX within the next two years ...

Have a nice flight what ever you go for ...!

If the fare justifies it, why not go with LX? New airline, new service and different atmosphere to BA.

You would be taking a gamble though. We all know what to expect from BA---generally good service, with reasonable IFE, nice Boeing 777.

If the difference in fare is say, below 100 pounds, I would personally stick to BA, esp. if I were responsible for other people's tickets....although it would be nice to fly on something different like Swiss, they have had some problems recently, and their pilot workforce is apparently unhappy.....still a very new, and fragile airline.

Up to you, of course! Whatever you end up doing, enjoy the flight!

I would take either one, they are both great performing aircraft from takeoff to cruising altitude. I should know I have flown both types.

Take the MD-11. I personally prefer the B777 very much but we've got to cherish the chance of flying the MD-11s when they are around!

Can you deal without T.V. for just a few hours? Can you fly just enjoying the sounds sights all the while thinking, this will probably be the only time I will ever fly on an MD-11?

If yes, then you are one of us. . .go with your heart and fly the MD-11. 777s are nice, especially ones with PTVs, but you will be able to fly them for years to come. Service and PTVs are not what's is important here. . .we ALL know that. Being able to log an MD-11 flight is pretty neat in my book; that is something I probably won't ever be able to accomplish. In terms of flying on 777s, I have many. I envy your possible Tri-Jet flight.

Just bring a book,

I lean toward what some of the other guys have said here. You will probably have a limitless number of chances to fly 777s in the next 25 years.
I, however, will never be able to fly an MD-11 again. I live in Dallas, and American's are all gone. Delta has some, but they're on routes I will never likely fly......... and I am a college student, so buying a ticket for the heck of it is not an option.
I have flown DC-10s twice and an MD-11 once. I am really glad- I enjoyed all three flights a whole lot. Smooth airplanes, and quiet too.
And, Swiss is a new experience to have.

Of course, if Brit is a whole lot cheaper, then your mind will be made up for you.

Hi friends!

Thanks a lot for a very good feedback. I think that IF I have a great deal flying with SWISS I will go for that, no question. But if the fares are mostly the same I might have to sacrifice my enthusiast option for a more familiar one. My wife and kids would "kill me" if I said to them that we would fly SWISS MD11 only because I would like it. Sometimes we have to drop our hobby down and put up all family issues up. But I do appreciated all you answers, thank you very much!

Hi CV990

I've just realised what a stupid mistake I made in my post: I am sorry for quoting the price in 'pounds'....I forget that not everybody lives in England!!  Insane

This equates to 159 euros.

Let me just add two things:

1) I myself have just booked a flight with Swiss, LHR-ZRH-EZE for a really good price..320 pounds.....in Business class!

2) Have a great stay in SFO!

320 pounds in buisiness?! WOW!!! My advice, take the MD-11 while you still can. I have flown on two Delta MD-11's this year (CDG-ATL, ATL-MCO) and found it to be not only a beautiful aircraft but a comfortable one too. As someone else said 777's will be around for years, but as for the MD-11  Crying
Just a point about PTV's................. From the way some people talk they wudn't fly without them  Wink/being sarcastic

I took a BA 777 from ATL to LGW (continued on BA to BCN and flew back on DL from CDG) and found comfort mediocre. The legroom was pretty tight and the seat was kind of thin. It was a comfortable seat, but because of the thinness, I could feel everything that the person behind me did to it. The PTV was nice and the flight still very enjoyable, but it wasn't as comfortable as some planes I've been on. The DL 777 back was great in terms of comfort! Anyway, I hope that you have a great trip!

PTV's mean nothing to me. I have flown with and without them, and in some cases I could do without.

No PTV's gives you a chance to relax, think, maybe take a nap, as there aren't a whole lot of places to go while in a pressurized metal tube at 37,000 ft.

You could always take a TAP A340 to EWR and then connect to an AA 767 or 757?

Hi Ewr737!

I like very much TAP, but the problem is that TAP fares can't beat BA ones. For example in BA my youngest kid pays 50 %, in TAP it pays 66%, the other thing is that I need to stop and New York and I might need to change airports yes? And finnally if I go straight from LHR to SFO I can have a good time to relax and prepare myself to leave SFO and drive to FAT. Unfortunetly TAP is not too good in connections, last year I wanted to fly from FAO to YYZ and with BA I did FAO/LHR - LHR/YYZ, if I wanted to fly with TAP it was more expensive and I had to make FAO/LIS - LIS/JFK or EWR - JFK or EWR-YYZ, it was too much! Otherwise without connections I'll go always with TAP, infact TAP is with Swissair the airline that I flew most.
Regards and thanks for your advice!

From a purely aviation enthusiast point of view, I would go with the MD-11 as they are becoming a rare sight in the skies in passenger configuration but since you'll be traveling with your family, the BA 777 flight would be the obvious choice as you'll have PTVs & a more refined product that your family will enjoy much more than on Swiss' MD-11.

Hi!

Just to make an end to this matter and also to give you some feedback I decided to go with BA. After comparing the prices BA is unbeatable. For an adult BA gives me a price for a ONE YEAR ticket € 775 with tax included, my youngest kid will pay half of the above price. SWISS will charge me for adult € 1200 + 100 taxes and my kids will pay € 650 each, I can't make it, it will be too expensive to fly the MD11, I know I'll loose this oportunity for good but higher values ask me to take BA.
Regards and thanks for all your feedback
