I welcome this news if true. However, some months ago, RR said it would not go through with any plan to fit RR Trents on these aircraft, for fear of US sanctions.
However, I sincerely hope this IS true, since I strongly disagree with the US view of Iran. Of course, there may well be elements among the Iranian "conservatives" who support terrorism, but these are on the way out. The moderate Khatami has a huge electoral mandate and there is a strong mood for change in Iran. Moreover, placing sanctions on Iran only helps the conservatives in that it obstructs the efforts of moderates to develop the Iranian economy, which has suffered badly under the mullahs and ayatollahs.
IR badly needs new aircraft and although the A310s are a welcome development, the A330s will provide much needed replacements for the very elderly 747s. Iranian aviation is changing, but don't expect to go plane spotting at Mehrabad just yet!
