Qantas Enthusiasts: Question About 747 (80s)

Sun Oct 06, 2002 9:47 pm

Browsing through airliners.net and many books I found out that there is only a single picture around showing an old PW-powered 747-200 in Qantas current livery (VH-EBA, QFs first 747). Some of these aircraft were sold as late as up to 7 years after this livery was introduced.
I want to know if most of the original 747 fleet of Qantas never wore the current colours before sold to United and other airlines. (The first aircraft sold to People Express in 1985/86 of cause left the fleet in old livery)
Also I want to know which name VH-EBA was given after 747-400 VH-OJA was named "City of Canberra" in 1989.

To the best of my knowledge, no other P&W 742's aside from VH-EBA (which was leased to Airlanka for a while) were ever painted into the new QF livery- only the RR powered aircraft.

VH-EBA wore the new colours as she returned on lease to Qantas after being sold in 1984. The lease ran between 1986 and 1993. During this time she did not carry a name as VH-OJA became the City of Canberra. The only other name EBA carried was King Ijijawa with Air Lanka between '84 and '86.

I do know that several other JT9D powered B747-238s carried the new scheme but the only photo I can find is of VH-EBI at Hobart Airport during the 1989 dispute carrying the new colours. As EBI left in 1991 along with VH-EBH and EBJ through EBP I can only presume that it was some of these aircraft.
VH-EBJ retired wearing Air Pacific colours.

AJ,
as you can see if you look closely on the photo posted, VH-EBA indeed carried a name in 93 (and it can´t have been "Canberra").
To whom it may concern: I found a second 747-200B (PW-powered) in QFs "new" colours: VH-EBP.

It still remains a mystery to me why almost no photos seem to exist while there are many around showing the aircraft in original livery.

Just trying to help Na!
The name at the front may well be an engineer's farewell to the aircraft as I can't find any reference to a name carried after returning from Air Lanka.
