Best Way To Get To London

Mon Oct 07, 2002 6:41 am

I know this is a little far in advance, but I'm contemplating studying abroad in London next year, and as I've never flown to Europe before, I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the best airline to take to London, to either LHR or LGW. I'll start out in MEM, and I don't have a particular preference as to where I want to connect. If this helps, I'm planning on flying Business or First. So based on overall inflight experience, what would you recommend?
Thanks so much  Smile

Think you'll find it hard to beat Virgin Atlantic.

Do you mind any stops etc? MEM-AMS-LHR could be a possiblity on KLM.

no I don't mind stops, of course... I had not thought of stopping on the OTHER side of the pond, but that could work.

My guess is if you want first or business then BA's product is better than any of the American majors or Virgin - both 1st and Business on BA have fully flat beds. The only problem is that it tends to cost more than the competition. Of the others Virgin's Upper class is comfortable without having the flat bed of BA - United's first is pretty comfortable but very varied service levels (either very good or truly dreadful). BMI's Business class isn't quite as comfortable as BA's but does have very good service - only problem would be a change at MAN.

Sadly can't comment on Delta's, Continental etc. as I havent tried their business products.

I wonder why rickb thinks the world of BA? Maybe because yer a brit. UNITED's first is pretty darn cool, and if he is going to London to go to school I doubt he is going to go first, or business.

get a good deal on BA,UA,AA,VS any of those will get you where you have to go. And if your looking for the most inexpensive route, price around. All the airlines are good, some on this forum are just picky.

have fun.

Ual777contrail, first off, the name 727_Gal generally does not imply a guy. And secondly, I am planning on going Business or First, thanks to my father. I know those are two really anal points I'm making, but I'd rather not be thought of as a guy  Smile
And I will look into United, thanks!

Get some Continental/Virgin codeshare to LHR (VS don't fly to MEM).

Virgin Atlantic is generally thought to be the best across the pond... ranging from free massages, manicures, an inflight bar, and limousine services to brilliant IFE - on Upper Class.

Ual777Contrail - sorry mate I thought I had been quite objective rather than just supporting BA. Does anyone else have a bed in Business across the pond from London to the US?

I even made a recommendation for UAL's 1st class with one proviso so dont know why im getting a hard time  Wink/being sarcastic

As for thinking the world of BA I freely admit I do - BUT it has nothing to do with being a brit - its simply because out of all of the airlines I have used - BA seem to be the most consistently good, with in many respects a superior product (other than economy). I have similar regard to AA in that virtually all my flights with them have been excellent and MRTC makes economy flying very comfortable - but I have never flown transatlantic with them so I didn't comment on them.

There is no better business or first class product on the market at the moment than BA's - the first and business products of the American airlines come nowhere close to BA despite what they may think! VS is also good, but BA is still better - so if you have the money fly BA (it is remarkably expensive though!) If you want to save money try AF via CDG... they have improved enormously in recent years...

Swim - not enough people do it these days.

If you don't fancy, fly The World's Favourite Airline, British Airways.

On NW, you can fly MEM-DET-LHR for a fairly good price.
Or you can fly MEM-ORD-LHR on UA for a decent price as well.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

If you land at London Manston, you can be in the capital in little more than three hours.

My personal preference would be to go with Virgin, although I have flown both Continental and Northwest's business classes and found them acceptable, if not interesting.
Granted if its a free ride thanks to your parents (are they looking to adopt?), I would push for the Concorde, either BA or AF, just for the experience.
Whatever you do just make sure you enjoy the trip.

Best airline across the pond in C in BD. Better than VS/SQ/NZ/BA/DL/CO etc.

Zrs70 - have to disagree - whilst I love British Midland and think their C class is excellent - the fact that BA have moved on to the flat beds takes it one step further in terms of comfort.

What I will say is the BD's C class maybe less comfortable than BA's C/J class - BD's service is as good as BA's F class - if not slightly better.

I would go as far to say that I rate BD higher than Virgin, but slightly below BA - if price becomes an issue - BD is an excellent choice !!!

Well... since you don't mind stops, Virgin First Class would be great (I'd love to do that if I could).
