Is Something Wrong With Zrh?

Mon Oct 07, 2002 5:16 pm

I am a little bit surprised that we have so few new airlines who are filling the gap that Swissair left last year here at Zurich. Whats wrong there? Look at GVA, MXP, MUC etc. they all have a bunch of new airlines starting operations next month.....but for ZRH, only one (Germanwings) comes to my mind!! Or have I missed some?

Perhaps this is a little simplistic but the situation in ZRH isn't the same as that in BRU after Sabena went to the wall. Swiss has stepped into much of Swissair's shoes -- you can bet that it's had its pick of the better routes, leaving all the scraps for anyone else.

What about that new Swiss freight carrier with MD-11's. Can't remember the name but I've heard nothing in the past few months. They said they will fly to Hong Kong.

The name of the new freighter airline is Catran, but it's still a paper-project. They intend to start cargo flights between BSL (Basle) and various destinations, which where served by SR (also from BSL).

Well, there are at least some more new routes/airlines:
-Air Holland: once weekly to Banjul with B757-200s (if they'll be still around by then)
-germanwings: thrice daily to Cologne/Bonn with A319-100s
-Royal Air Maroc: twice weekly to Casablanca with B737-500s/-700s
-Volare Airlines: twice daily to Rome Fiumicino with A320-200s

rumours:
-Hahn Air: twice daily to Friedrichshafen with Saab 340s

Hello,

There will be more new flights out of Geneva with the next timetable than out of Zurich. I think there is nothing wrong with Zurich but I'm sure that for an airport it is a big work to attract new airlines. This work started in Geneva in 1996 after Swissair cancelled all long haul flights and now, 5 years after new operators like CO or TG launched new flights.
Until 2001, Zurich airport didn't need to do this work because of Swissair operations which were very big at the moment. Now, the staff of ZRH airport has to do this long work, but it is impossible to attract new airlines in such a short time!

A Major problem may be that ZRH has has so high evironmental regulations that airlines don't really fight to fly there... Added to that the weekend restrictions for overflying Germany putting the airport in the situation of not being to airline friendly.

And what is with Qatar Airways and Aerolineas Argentinas...both where rumoured starting flights to ZRH from Doha and the latter from Madrid. Are these plans still on the hand?
We should also have more carriers from the UK. There is a duopoly of Swiss and BA with Easjet who has a foot in the door. ZRH-UK is a big market, so I am sure there is some place for more carriers, especially for the LLC. Perhaps BMIbaby???

I know bmi applied for traffic rights to operate flights from East Midlands to ZRH one year ago. Nothing happened yet, but let's wait and see, maybe we will see a daily flight next year.

Well, I suppose, without Swissair, ZRH is only another regional hub like MXP or GVA. Many connections to ZRH are more than saturated, just as for example ZRH-Englans, or ZRH-Germany. Add to that, that SWISS surely took the most profitable routes out of ZRH.

GVA was different. When SR decided to drop their operations drastically, they left a wide open market for others, as for example AF, or now also Easyjet.

ZRH was a bit of a bubble, whic bursted with the SR grounding.

Unfortunately.....

BTW, just heard today that Lufthansa (mainline) will return to BSL with a six times weekly B737-500 flight from FRA next March. Looks like the other airlines would also take care of BSL more and more.

BSL is a different story. A pax has most probably to change aircraft for a longer trip, either in ZRH or - in this example - in FRA. Why not? These chances are not that big in ZRH, the main SWISS hub.
