What Do You Think Of Jal?

Wed Oct 09, 2002 9:19 pm

I haven't been on JAL for sometime. However, I heard that it offers high level of service with great entertainment facilities on board.

Has anyone been on JAL recently????? For example, SYD-NRT-HKG etc. If yes, how was it? What aircraft were you on? And how much was it?

Awaiting your reply.  Smile

I flew their business class from ATL-NRT in 1995. I thought it was pretty mediocre.

Nice airline, I hope they restore their former Middle East routes i.e Dubai, Kuwait, Jeddah, Cairo and Beirut, as far as their new livery is concerned I think the JAL acronym should have been placed inside that blank Red patch on the tail. By the way do they plan to retain the JAS A300's?

Had to fly a few times as passenger to/from Japan and within Japan because of the world soccer championship last May and June...
JAL is not as nice as ANA for cabin service. I did travel first class twice with JAL and once in business class with ANA... ANA was outstanding...

I think Skipper's impression is what most Japanese people share. ANA is reputed as the better airline.

ANA was outstanding...

I have heard the same from my cousin, after a business date in Japan last year he has flown from NRT to FRA and he told me that NH is a very good airline with very friendly crews. He got an upgrade into First Class (he was actually booked in Business Class) and during landing at FRA he was allowed to sit on the cockpit jumpseat.

I haven't really flown JAL, but I have flown with their Okinawa-based subsidary, Japan TransOcean Air(JTA), I found them to be mediocre, but it's been a few years ago.
I flew the same route with ANA's subsidary, Air Nippon and I found it to be a great flight considering how short it was- 30 minutes with really nice FAs, on-demand beverage service, music, a newspaper in English(it was a regional flight)
I've flown with ANA between Osaka Kansai and Okinawa, when I started flying with them 5 years ago, I was really impressed with them. Back then, they had a nice box meal but my last flight which was a few months ago didn't have food service. The crews were very nice, though.
Now that I have redeemed my WorldPerks miles, I would definitely want to try a Japanese airline from the US to Japan, especially with Northwest's lack of service on such a long flight.

I live and work in Japan (I'm a rep based at ANK in Sapporo)and most Japanese carriers offer very good service. JAS is probably the most friendly in terms of staff. I did a JAL flight from Kansai to LAX last year and the service was excellent in Business class. Domestic flights in Japan are the same as before -just like riding a bus where you get a cup of tea or coffee . The secret is just ask for a pen or a postcard and they will give you some goodies.

I flew JAL roundtrip between Los Angeles and Nagoya in 2001 on an Md-11. Weird plane with a weird interior and even weirder service and IFE.

I'm confident that their flagship 744 services are pretty good, though.

I've flown JAL LHR-NRT, NRT-NGO, NRT-LHR, VYR-NGO return and several other flights, mostly in economy but once in business. Despite their soulful advertisements (tugging at the heartstrings), the service and cleanliness are nothing to write home about. For foreigners especially, the seats can be agonizing after 6+ hours. IFE is okay if it works, but on three of my recent flights, IFE didn't work properly.

I've noticed a steady decline in the last 5 years and like other posters, have heard that ANA is much better although I've yet to try them.

AA was actually quite good, NRT-ORD recently... and that in economy class. Nothing special, but decent service and food, plus more room.
