Delta, Air France, Business Class, Does It Work?

Fri Oct 11, 2002 6:29 pm

Air France and Delta are code sharing succesfully on a lot of flight betwen France and US.

Air France has 3 products, first, business and economy ; Delta has just Business and Economy.

I have flown Air France Business and Delta Business and Economy.

I found the Business Class product (MD11) of Delta superior in very aspect. Specially sleeping comfort, seat width, catering ...

Delta economy class was however very simple.

I think the Air France product on new Aircraft like 777 and new Airbusses is much better (haven't flown it though).

I would be unhappy if I bought a Delta Business Class ticket and got the Air France product ... Same thing with AF economy ticket in Delta aircraft.

I think products AF and Delta share are very different and un-predictable.

Does Delta sell First Class tickets on flight operated by Air France ?

No, Delta does not sell First Class seats on the AF-operated transatlantic flights.

For Business Class, Delta's BusinessElite is miles ahead of Air France's (the legroom (60 inches pitch on DL vs. 48 inches on AF), the space, the 2-2-2 config on DL vs. 2-3-2 on AF). I actually know many experienced French business travellers who, when forced to fly on an AF ticket to the U.S. due to corporate policy, insist on flying only on the Delta-operated flights (with an AF-coded ticket)

In Economy, it depends on which aircraft type you get. For example, DL's 777s (which are used mostly to CDG and LGW) Economy is decent (especially the new 3-3-3 seating on some a/c) and all have PTVs and headrests (similar to AF's 777s). AF's 744s in Economy on the other hand are comparable to Delta's Economy on the 763ERs and MD11s in terms of seat space, recline, and lack of PTVs.

The difference in seat comfort in Business actually reminds me of the time I tried to change my Business Class reservation on an AF-operated JFK-CDG flight (I also had an AF coded ticket). I called AF reservations in the U.S. and asked to be switched to the Delta-operated flight 118 instead and the agent proceeded to tell me that if I did that, I would miss out on French cuisine, as well as a comfortable L'Espace 127 seat, as well as French hospitality...I then told him that instead, I would get a Business Class seat that reclined 160degrees and stretched the length of 3.5 windows as well as a nice hot fudge sundae to top off my meal....that pretty much shut him up for a while....

My father has flown both products on his way back from Saudi Arabia. He will often take AF to CDG from RUH and then switch to DL to Atlanta. He has never complained about the AF product. He says that their food is better than Delta's, that their in-flight entertainment system is better, but that Delta's seats are better. He sort of sees it as a trade-off.

I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both carriers, but what is nice is that the customer, if he knows each product, can choose between.

AF Business is 127 degrees because according to "certain studies", 127 degrees is the angle at which the human body is most comfortable. Don't ask me to go into further detail, that is what I have heard lol.

In my opinion, it is not worth buying an AF first class ticket. The seat is the same except for the color and the fact that it reclines 180 degrees. The food is also exactly the same with the exception of presentation and caviar.

The food on AF is quite exceptional for airline food...I have eaten food that has come inbound and I won't complain. The business/first class desserts are amazing!!!

In Tempo, Airbuses and 777s have PTVs. I know 747s don't have them, but don't know if the airline is going to place PTVs gradually.

AF business on the Airbuses is 2-2-2 but on the 747/777 it is 2-3-2.

Flpuck, Air France Business goes to 131 degrees now (what an improvement !!) and 127 was chosen because of the NASA studies saying that in space, 127 degrees is the angle your body will naturaly get into.
