2 Weeks From Now: Germanwings Is Born!

Sun Oct 13, 2002 2:24 pm

In two weeks on October 27th Germanwings will launch it's service on a CGN-ZRH flight. The flight will leave Cologne/Bonn at 0600.
Is there anybody here who will be at the airport to see that plane take off or is there maybe even somebody here that will be on that flight?

I might go to CGN to watch it leave.

I will be flying GW in November to CGN ex-STN.

I am really looking forward to flying on this flight, for a number of reasons-

-New airline

-I love the livery

-First trip to Germany

-I'm bored of flying Ryanair the whole time

-Good fare (38 pounds total for STN-CGN-STN)

-First time on A319

-Looking forward to the different style of inflight service (even if its not free)

By the way, Air Berlin has already started flights to STN...at the moment, they seem to fly only to Munster.

Capt.Picard,

Will you fly Germanwings just for the fun of flying or will you stay here for a while and enjoy the "Rheinland" (the Cologne/Bonn area)?

Well, kind of both.

I always enjoy trying new airlines (and experiences) whenever possible, but I also really wanted to visit Germany too....I am only staying 1 day in Cologne. I'd love to stay longer, but unfortunately I'm still studying and cannot spend too much time flying around, or spending money in nice cafes. Big grin

Next stop will be Berlin, with AB and then maybe Munich, in the future.

Apparently nobody will get up early on a sunday morning to see the first Germanwings flight taking off. Maybe it's because there are already (at least) three A319s painted in Germanwings colours, so there's no need to get up so early to see a Germanwings A319. Of course, from a passenger's point of view it will be something special because it will be the first flight of this new airline - but from a spotter's point of view there's hardly any difference.

Capt.Picard, when coming to Munich, tell me and I'll ry to be there, too.

Anything special about their seating arrangement?
Just wondering since Easyjet made an issue of wanting a new, and I assume mor eprofitable, seating layout (and/or emergency exits?) if they were to choose the A319.
So I'm just wonder about `low-cost' airline 319s...

Capt Picard:

In addition to Muenster, Air Berlin will be flying to Nuernberg (Nuremberg in GB spelling) from November, I believe. And they've got a discount for all people under 21 - even on their cheapest fares. I nearly booked them for January, but getting from Nuremberg to Munich is a bit too much of a hassle for me. The only reason I was interested is to experience Air Berlin (with food and perhaps even inflight entertainment), and to get a chance to fly in a wingletted 737. Unfortunately, I'll probably stick to Go. (GBP 58 for a return flight, as opposed to 86 Euros + train journey)

Anyway, if German Wings ever fly STN-MUC, I'll definitely give them a try!

Regards

I will not come to CGN on Sunday, 27th because I already saw a lot of Germanwings planes at work, at least two 4U planes pass my office window every day. Since a few weeks I even pay more attention to an Airbus in Eurowings livery because they will be gone very soon.

In another Forum (http://www.airliners.de) I read that there would be a big party going on at CGN so it wouldn't be too much because of the first 4U flight but rather because of the party Wink/being sarcastic

Well, I'll be on the return flight from ZRH to CGN on the morning of the 27th, and I will then post a trip-report on this site....

According to their website, Germanwings has already sold more than 100'000 tickets. For those speaking german, there is also a PowerPoint-Presentation to download.

I was thinking along siniliar lines but I suspect that NUE would then get
the -400s or non-wingletted `800s! Apparently they are going to use some -400s on the `City Shuttle'.

Yes, Germanwings sold already 100.000 tickets. I read it in a press release last Friday shortly after it came out of the fax machine. Unbelivable, this airline will be a big success in my opinion.

Yes Groobster. Hapag Lloyd Express a subsidiary of Hapag Lloyd announced also that they will offer cheap flights to major European airports from December.

Groobster/Sabena332: And not to forget Deutsche BA (http://www.flydba.com). Once launched by British Airways, the airline has recently changed it's strategy and is now offering low-cost flights. As far as I know, it is expected that they will join the easyjet-familiy in a year or so.

Then we have Germania Flug. An airline with a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft who used to be a charter airline so far. They were serving popular travel destinations out of Germany. Earlier this year, Germania started low costs flights from Berlin to Cologne and Frankfurt in Germany.

I'm really wondering where that will lead to. It will be interesting to see how each of this airline is performing in the future.

What will happen to Germania Flug after Hapag Lloyd Express starts it's regular service? I know that HLX will operate with 737-700's from Germania and I doubt that they will keep on flying as two different airlines using one airlines planes.... Is that the end of Germania then?
