TPA Airside E Verdict

Sun Oct 13, 2002 9:55 pm

This past Saturday (October 12, 2002), me, SR 103, and another individual had an opportunity to visit the open house for TPA's new Airside "E". I was very impressed with the new airside.

- The shuttles had the "new car smell".
- There was a much larger turnout of people for this open house than the last open house, which TPA held for the then-new Airside "A".
- The setup of Gate E70 commuter area is unique for TPA. It is somewhat reminiscent of the old Airside "E".

Overall, the HCAA did a very good job promoting this event. This was one of those "once in a blue moon" events that all of us have accustomed to in this post-9/11 world.

If there are any further questions, I will attempt to answer them to the best of my ability.

I was there too on Saturday for 4 hours. I was not too impressed. These days the newer airsides have no personality whatsoever. They all look the same. And that band SUCKED!! I miss the old "E". And what's with Louis Miller the HCAA director? Every time I read about him in the paper he's always talking about how he doesn't like the original buildings because the monorail comes in on different level than where the planes are!

So, as of Wednesday, when Delta,United & Air Canada make the move, there will be NO resemblence of how the place looked back in my childhood in the 70's. I was out there on Sunday as well, watching the Delta aircraft on the east side runway. That will change on Wed. also. Delta will no longer be associated with ethe east side, except for the maint. base. Oh well, I got my pin, and my bumper sticker, but no poster. Oh and you know what else? Some of the food places were open, but you couldn't but anything!!!! Display only!!!

You might want to ease up just a bit on Lou Miller. He is VERY well respected around the airport management industry, and has an excellent background. Before coming to TPA, he was the long-time Airport Director at SLC. The folks at HCAA could have a done a lot worse than hiring Lou Miller, especially following the retirement of the icon of TPA airport management, George Bean. The man knows more about building and running airports than any of us do.

Here's coverage of the open-house festivities from the St. Petersburg Times:

Food, jazz, prizes, usher in Tampa Aiport's Airside E

I wish I could go to more of these kind of events. As it is, I only went to the open house for AUS back in 1999 and DFW dedication ceremonies in 1973.

What are you talking about? Airsides C and D are awful. They have no good food at all. They are dark and claustrophobic. And the escalators from the shuttle to the gates is a HUGE pain.

Airside E might not win an award as the most architecturally stunning terminal in the country, but Airsides A, E, and F are great places to fly out of.

727Lover:

I'm sorry to hear you didn't like the new Airside E all too well. I do agree though that the airport could have done without the "swing band."

The "Frankly Gourmet" hot dog station, across from gate E64, was offering a hot dog, a bag of chips, and a soda for $1. I ate around noon so I don't know if Host Marriott closed the concessions after a certain period.

As I happen to be in TPA visiting friends, I too took in the sights at Airside E. While it won't win any points for originality, it excels at the roomy-ness factor... Especially compared to C/D. I did note that while the gates are numbered 62-75, there is no gate 63 at this time. The space and a blank jetway door are there, but they wanted the extra room at 62 for widebody aircraft until the additional gate is needed. If you noticed only DL's gates were ready for use. Gates 72-75's podiums had no equipment or signs at all. So I would assume that UA and AC will not be moving in for a little while yet.

For those who didn't get to go, there are 35 photos of the new Airside E (including some of Delta's Crown Room) here .
