Delta And The MD11

Mon Oct 14, 2002 4:59 am

How much longer will the DL MD11 be in service? The reason I ask is because (I know its far off) but Christmas 2003 I am flying SAN-ATL-MCO and right now, DL has an MD11 on the ATL-MCO route... I have a chance to fly on heavies the entire route...

763 SAN - ATL
MD11 ATL - MCO
772 MCO - ATL
763 ATL - SAN

This is exciting now, and I hope I am not in for a let down. Will the MD11 still be in service?

I am not a big fan of the plane that put MCdonnell Douglas out of business, but, it would be great to fly on it at least once.

From what I've heard, they'll be around at least another 5 years, if not 7 or 8. At the end of 2003, I'm sure not one will have left the fleet yet.

Most of them were delivered between 1990-1993 if I am not mistaken.

It was kind of funny when AA was supposed to get rid of them right away in the early 90's but yet they hung on for years after... On a side note, my mom flew thru SAN-SFO-MCO on UAL and she said she saw a 3 engined KLM at SFO... If I am not mistaken, KLM hasnt really announced a date when they want them out of their fleet.

What would they replace them with? Any outstanding 777 orders would not be sufficient to replace the MD-11s on a plane-for-plane basis. As for the repainting I think they're just taking their sweet time with it. I'm booked on one on the CVG-LGW flight in March, and I'm looking forward to it- it'll be my first MD-11 flight in almost 8+ years. Here's hoping it'll be as nice as I remember!

N813DE is currently the only frame in the newest scheme, but all ships are scheduled for an update, coinciding with a C-check I believe, but someone in DL/s MX or ops will have to clarify.

Well, at the rate Delta appears to be shrinking their intercontinental flights, they soon won't need any MD-11's.  Smile

Delta uses a lot of their MD-11's on their florida routes, and boy do they fill up. back in august i checked numerous flts from ATL-MCOfor a flt in November, a couple of which were MD-11's, and all of them only had a few seats left.

As much as I love Douglas I have to make this point. The MD-11 did not kill Douglas. I am not saying the MD-11 is even responsible, but Douglas killed them selves. I am the biggest MD-11 fan but I feel that Douglas made a mistake that they have made before. Rushing to beat the competition they missed a few things and It came back and bit them in the ass. You can't rush certain things, the 777, and MD-11 were launched around the same time, the MD-11 was ready in 1990, the 777 in 1995, I think Douglas just rushed it. One more thing I do not believe this is the only factor responsible in down fall of McDC.

I was supposed to get a DL MD-11 last June when I flew ATL-MCO but it was replaced with a 764 on Delta Flight 63

I know MCdonnell Douglas killed themselves, by building the MD11... I just see the AC as a total waste and it pisses me off... I still want to fly on it once though...  Big grin BTW, is their a fuel stop for that bird between ATL and MCO???? LOL.. J/K.

Having flown on an MD-11 for the first time back in late August I must say that this is one heck of an airplane!!! It has great takeoff and cruise performance and it is very quiet inside. Too bad McDonnell Douglas couldn't get their act together when they were developing this aircraft to get the bugs in it's systems straightened out before many customers like SIA went instead for the underpowered CFM56-5C A340-300.

Actually, the MD-11 wasn't any worse as far "as getting it's sytems straightened out" as was the 747-400;which had software bugs, plumbing issues, too many configurations etc. The 747-400 has been a success. Perhpas "crappy marketing efforts" did MDC in.

DL is trying to farm out all Asian and European travel to codeshares. Pretty soon they won't need the 11's anymore, and they can just use the 763's and 777's for the oddball routes not covered by codesharing.

If DL doesn't want their PW4462 powered MD-11s anymore for it's Asian and European routes then they should be picked up by World Airways or ATA for their chartered flights to replace their DC-10s & L-1011s.

I made the MCO-ATL route last may with Delta. According to Delta timetable the plane should have been an MD-11, but they used a B767-300 instead. The plane was quite full, so I don't think they have any problem in filling even a bigger aircraft. But, since MCO-ATL segment is just 1 hour long, isn't uneconomical use an aircraft (like the MD-11) suited for very long trip?

At one time I think DL had a MD11 MCO-LAX-NRT.... Maybe this flight is MCO-ATL-NRT??? I havent really paid attention if thats the case or not...

if Im wrong, than dont they have to use the aircraft somewhere?

Besides the performance issues with the MD11, it should also be considered that it was really a victim of the times. When it was conceived/designed, the twins (767, A300) has just started to become utilized on transatlantic flights. By the time the MD11 entered service, the twins ruled the Atlantic airways. Unless you're flying cargo, why fly an aircraft with three engines when one with two will do just fine? Even later, longer-range twins in the form of the 777 entered service on transpacific routes, further eroding the MD11s usefulness. So I would go so far as to say that even had the MD11 been a stellar performer it probably never would have been a hugely successful aircraft from a sales standpoint.

Maiznblu I believe that was the initial route for the DL MD-11 in early '91. DL's fortunes in the Pacific sort of waned and at some point the MD-11 was replaced by domestic ships from LAX to MCO and if I'm not mistaken LAX-NRT is no longer served by DL. While the MD-11 is not optimized for short hauls such as ATL-MCO, I believe the idea is to utilize transatlantic aircraft that are on the ground in mid-day and would be sitting on the tarmac doing nothing otherwise.

Why does Delta want to get rid of there European routes? I fly them 3-4 times a year and they are always full!

Has there been an official announcement that the MD11's will be gone by the end of 2005? I know that many things have changed over the past year, but Delta's 2001 annual report stated their intention to keep the owned MD 11's (8/15 in the fleet) for seven to nine more years (i.e., until 2008-2010).
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

Well, how "official" is it that Delta is cutting its international flights or tries "to farm out all Asian and European travel to codeshares"? Is it just an observation or can be read somewhere?

Just in the last few days the rumour mill at DAL says that all/some of the MD11s have been sold. Some think that the aircraft are going to UPS. DAL has openly been trying to get rid of them for years. Perhaps they have been successful. BTW. The MD11 is a large POS. That's my opinion and I've flown the airplane.

Maiznblu_757 You completly misunderstood what I said. I meant by the haste in the production of the aircraft they might have missed some important issues, not that the made a mistake in producing the plane.

Well, now there is that thread confirming that DL is getting rid of all but three of their MD-11s by June 2003. It makes me kind of sad because I think the MD-11 is a beautiful plane. I'm just happy that I got a chance to fly DL's MD-11s longhaul twice (ATL-BRU, BRU-ATL), but I do have to admit that the thing is a piece of crap on the inside. I still love it though!
