Mon Oct 14, 2002 8:18 pm

Looks like a big crack or something... anybody know what this is and why it was flying like that?

It's probably just a really crappy patch job on the composite skin. Does look like an ugly scar though, doesn't it?

I believe this has been posted before, however I am not experienced in finding archives, so I'll let somebody else do that.

A wild guess on my part, but the appearance of the buff marks on the crown of the airplane would lead me to believe that this maybe an ex-TWA bird that was stripped and repainted in American colors. Usually planes that American bought have very polished skins because they never were painted. If this is the case; maybe the paint on the forward leftt wing fillet is just peeling off. It does look a little disconcerting though!

The reg and the PW engines would confirm Broke's suspicion (that it is an ex-TWA bird).  Smile

Indeed, it is an ex-TWA plane, as you can tell by both the terrible looking buff marks (really, can't they do better than that?) and the more obvious Pratt and Whitney engines.

I think that the paint peeling is one possibility- the ex TeeDub planes seem to have terrible paint jobs, with letters falling off of the tails and whatnot. Also, I think the composite patch- job is another reasonable explanation- perhaps they patched it, but didn't have time to paint it afterward.

Yeah you guys have the right idea. Obviously the paint on the fuselage is stripped and polished. The area where you see the missing paint are areas where the paint does not get stripped for a repaint. So what you are actually seeing is the dark blue paint (which is the color of the bottom of the fuse of the newest TWA scheme) and not a crack like a few of you guys thought. It does appear that AA took the cheap route when it came to painting the TWA jets. I mean do some of you guys actually think that was a real crack and that plane would be flying like that? I dont think so. lol
Hope this helps,
James

And no that is not patch work either. Just the old TWA paint showing underneath the peeling AA paint.

Maybe the AA paint crews wanted to scare somebody, when I first saw the picture, I thought the plane had to have flown through some VERY rough weather.

Anybody know why the crews do a bad job repainting the ex-TWA aircraft? It always seems as if the paint is peeling off. In regards to the buffing, I think this was the best the AA crews could do as you must recall that there was white paint there previously.

We have already established that it's an ex-TWA plane, but just another tip-off; note the small exit door aft of the wing. That's the TWA configuration. Original AA 757s don't have that, they have 2 overwing exits instead.

then I guess it would be dumb to point out the engines. AA uses Rolls Royce while Teeedub went with the cuter Pratt & Whitney engines...

...or the TWA logo/ID just aft of L1? You can't really make out the letters in the photo but from seeing it on other former TWA aircraft I know what it is.
