Pick One: LH A340 Or AA 777

Tue Oct 15, 2002 4:41 pm

I will be flying DFW - FRA, and have narrowed my choices to LH and AA. I have always liked the A340, and have never been on one, but I've heard AA MRTC makes it the better choice.

Which would you prefer and why?

Of course, if you see any better options, let suggest them too  Acting devilish

I have flown both the 340 and the 777 and if I had the choice, I would pick the 777. It's a fabulous aircraft. And no, I will not give you my reasons, for then I will end up in a Boeing vs. Airbus discussion, and I have better things to do today  Smile

By the way, if you fly coach, you should definately book American: the extra legroom is very pleasant on these long flights!

I think this will sum this up for you...

LH A340 coach - Seat pitch 32"
AA 777 MRTC - Seat pitch 35"-36"

If you wish to splurge, BA via LGW will give you the best 1st class product of all 3 from DFW.

Read some of the long haul trip reports on A.NET about LH and how medicore at best their service is (in coach) then pick AA for a much beeter experience.

Take AA's B777! I have just returned from an AA trip to LAX, I had AA's B777 on the LHR-ORD and DFW-LGW legs. Read my trip reports to find out more.

Just some reasons why AA's B777 is miles ahead of LH's A340:

- MRTC gives you a lot of room, actually more than any other long haul carrier
- AA's meal service is great, I probably have had some of the best airline meals on AA
- PTVs in every seat with 10 video channels, plus flight map channel. Great choice of movies which are restarted every two and a half hours. LH just gives you two movies, and you have to watch them, when THEY decide to show them.
- B777 gives you a better flying experience, more powerful at take off, more room in the whole cabin.

Don't take LH, it's not worth the money,

Didn't AA cancel the MRTC again since they have to fill those planes up again so that they can earn more and reduce costs?

You are from Texas so AA will probably always be your first option so why not take something else which isn't always an option.

I have flown both the A340 and the 777 (both nearly full) and have to admit that I prefer the cabin of the A340 over the 777 (I must admit I am now thinking about my US A333 flight... not quite an A340 though...)

I was flying Lufthansa several times...(won't do it again..) and American triple seven's on ZRH-DFW , FRA-ORD,...
I would prefer the AA B777...

1) Lufthansa has very bad service (no PTV's , also in Business... )  Pissed
2) You have very baad leg room in the LH widebodies.
3) Their meals are not that good as these from American.

greetings.

I haven't heard about AA cancelling the MRTC program. I have just had flights on B777s, B738 and Super 80 and there was a loooot of legroom...

LH's seat pitch in Economy is really bad, I think only few carriers like Iberia are even worse...

Lufthansa has very bad service (no PTV's , also in Business... )

I flew Business on Lufthansa already back in 1995 and I had my PTV. Not any on demand yet but I had it and they havn't removed them since then.
I know that some people here really seem to call LH's service next to terrible but I know for sure that it isn't the case. Well not the best I admit but still very good and expect Lufthansa to really improve soon. Ohh by the way... if you want to be here at a.net you better book Lufthansa as they will soon offer internet access (for free for the first three monts) on flights to North America (and Asia?).

Oh, free internet on LH? I guess for First and Business pax only, and they have to bring their own laptop to use it, right?
Other airlines will soon offer internet access via PTVs in every seat, JAL, SIA and Virgin will be the first to offer it to ALL pax.

I flew FRA DFW on an LH A340 in May 2001.

The service was not bad but some of the flight attendants were a litte snippy. The problem with LH boils down to the amenities.

The leg room was horrible. When the women in front of me reclined, her head was so close I could have styled her hair. I am not kidding.

Also, they did not have PTV on every seat. Rather, the entertainment was displayed on the main screen only.

Thus my conclusion is AA. MRTC and PTV at every seat is a far superior product to LH.

On a another point, MRTC is alive and well at AA. They are still advertising this heavily and I have not heard of them spending money to reconfigure aircraft to the No Room Throughout Coach option all other airlines provide.

well, although i travel frequently on Lufthansa, which has less to do that i enjoy their service in economy (i do not at all). i do like their business and first, though, but that is certainly still not comparable to SQ or VS or whoever.

i´ve also traveled often on AA and if there´s an economy class i traveled on which is worse than Lufthansa´s, it´s AA´s. i can speak only of my own experience...

i would suggest if you do fly economy, don´t take AA or LH. well, if you go nonstop, than there´s no other choice, i realize.

Thank you for updating me on the MRTC matter. So it seems as if that was the only thing alive and well at AA then... I do hope that the US Aviation scene recovers soon though (including all the other suffering airlines there).

PTV's or not I wanna go for the oldest I can get... I wanna fly LH FRA-YVR-FRA as long as the 747-200 still does that run.

Udo,
Your own laptop means that you can also download onto your computer and do personal stuff while you could just go a little surfing but not really use the internet on the PTV option for stuff you would otherwise do at home.

i was on a FRA-DTW A340 300 flight in june 2002, and even though i was at an emergency row, the flight felt terrible. the service was the worst i've experienced, and the yellow cabin is not pretty at all. bad music, bad movie, bad magazines. almost felt happy entering a mesaba SAAB 340 later that day.

go for the 777

Daniel,

when you claim that AA's economy is worse than LH's, then I must ask you: are you referring to AA's B777? If yes, then you must have slept during your last flights...
Probably their B763 economy is crap, but not the B777's...

Honestly, I would fly USAirways. They offer the A330-300, which was a magnificent plane on my trip to Rome. Granted, you'll have to stop in Philladelphia. I too, by the way, live in Dallas. Well, I am going to school in Longview now, but it certainly won't ever be my hometown!

But the US a333 was nice and it's PTV beats all others!

If nonstop is your only option, I would probably go for the AA 777. I have not flown either the AA777 or the LF340, but I think I would pick the first. I fly American all the time, so miles would also play a role. But MRTC is a nice nice nice thing.

I've made economy-class runs on LH's 742s as recently as 1998, and the seat pitch was so terrible, it was actually funny. My LH 744 coach flights were far more pleasant.

LH's Service? I have no complaints. They didn't massage my calves and feet for me, but they DID give me free Beck's the whole way across the pond. I would've liked a PTV, but whadaya want for $600?

So- Service? fine. Legroom- horrible on the 742. Typical on the 744.

AA still offers US destinations for as less as €450 plus tax from Germany. Includes one stop at any AA gateway each way (sure, you can get the nonstops as well), includes B777 flights (with all their features in Economy), and if you don't fly from FRA, it even includes BA connections through LHR.
Not bad for €450...

Hey, funny you should ask this question, as I will be flying AA70 tomorrow, OCT. 16th DFW-FRA on a 777 and returning on AA71 Oct. 21 also on a 777. Why would I chose AA over LH? Well, the AA777 to me is a far superior aircraft on the inside than the LH 340. Private TV's on every seat. Better coach product with ample legroom, and lemme tell yah, you CAN tell a difference. Try Delta across the pond if you can't. Not to mention, your flight will most likely be shorter on the 777 since it travels at a faster speed than the A340, not by much though. Also, it depends on where your loyalties are. Mine are with AA, therefore I get great mileage and get to keep my gold status. However, I will tell you, I have flown AA, BA, DL, CO, LH, Swissair, KE, UA, CX, and AA has them all beat as far as legroom in economy. Food might be better on some, but when it comes down to it, I prefer ample space.

Ill let you know how the trip goes.

Usa4624, it looks like you will have much more chances to fly on 777 (or flew on it already) than on 340. So, take the Airbus widebody. I had a chance to take it only once, with LH too (the service was not great but, well, nothing bad about it either), and was just glad to fly on something I can hardly take again in near future. I liked 777 better but it is just my personal opinion, 340 is a nice aircraft too...

the hearts always wins...

my loyalty is with LH, all the way. Just for the reason that I am European, I feel home flying with them, especially now that I live in the U.S.
I also have to say that I am not expert of their Y product. I can understand it is not the most pampered or sophisticated.

All in all I don't like the more "American" casual service on American, but that is clearly subjective. Plus I have private issues with them ( pilot as ex boyfriend), therefore before I fly them again I think I will swim first if I need to.

nevertheless, I agree that MRTC is a clear advantage ( if the only), therefore go with it.
As for the metal, I like them both, but -again- if I can choose, I will always fly 340's. I like the silence inside and the way they look.

Shane,

I recently flew SIN FRA SIN and I reckon LH long haul is just atrocious. The IFE is just apalling , the Flight Attendants were, I am sure, Nazi stormtroopers in a previous life, the Y cabin was loathsome (all that gray) , the food was awful, terrible seat pitch. I will be very reluctant to ever fly them again. Oh, check my recent trip reports on them

Fly AA.

Hi Shane

Fly LH!!!

American carriers are cutting services due to their poor financial situation. Okay, you won't get a ptv in the A340, but you'll experience a really good service. You'll have plenty of opportunities to fly an a/c fitted with state of the arts features in the future, but high service in economy is more and more unusual nowadays.

So fly the european sky, fly die Deutsche Lufthansa!

I don't understand why you people are saying AA's international service is lacking. It is above standard. Trust me, I've flown a lot of other airlines, and in Y class, no one is going to be super. You aren't going to get fine china or anything, so things like PTV's, more legroom, definitely make up the difference. Shane, trust me, take AA. You will enjoy the space, the GOOD service, and the wonderful B777. Also, and this may be just me, but I always feel like I have a little more granduer than those on the smaller A340/330, and the 767 when I pull up in my 777, wingtips towering so high above theirs. Very awesome sight with those huge and powerful engines whirring.

What are some people talking about? It is not true at all that AA cut back service in Economy on long haul flights. That's pure BS from people who have never flown AA.
LH's service is really poor, even ridiculous compared to AA's B777.

What The Hell Is MRTC?...

Wed Oct 16, 2002 10:17 pm

...is that some kind of economy plus or enhanced economy or what? Because if so, there must be a difference in airfare. Anyway I'd be interested in that!

Spotterboy: Why don't you just sh.t up instead of telling people lies. I told you this once, and you just keep on doing that.

In general: before you start another A vs.B war: Things such as legroom, PTV and so on, have NOTHING to do with Airbus and Boeing, it's strictly carrier-bound!

MRTC of AA I think is very much around as I have seen the ad at least twice this week in international european newspapers.
For long haul, the most important for me is space (so AA)....and the PTV does help while a way the time.
That said, I had a horrible meal with AA once, a while a go and in a domestic service.
You should decide based on the miles you earn, ie., which program you belong to or which will give you a free ticket after this flight !!!!

I had wonderful experiance in LH A340 on ORD-MUC line. Althouth there were no PTVs, everything else was great. If you like techno music, you'll like their mix on one of their audio channels. Their relaxation program is nice as well. Fresh, clean look of cabin interior, great colors and everything makes everything just about perfect.

The only comperably great experiance I had on BA's 744 ORD-LHR flight.

My guess AA has equally great product, but if you are interested in either LH or A340 flying experiance, this is one excellent route to try them.

With this thread alone I have noticed the Udo will do anything to rip apart Lufthansa and there will be nothing that could change his opinion... Not even Lufthansa going far beyond Singapore level...

Anyways I'll say I just had good experiences with Lufthansa in both Economy and Business on both short and longhaul. It's just that some people here feel like they are the kings on board and want the F/A's to fall to their knees when they enter the cabin... hey how would you serve passengers that you have never seen before... like that? Get back to the real world!

I flew the mighty 777 from ORD to FRA on UA and I did have a PTV... so what? I looked at a defunctional screen for the whole flight and it worked and for sure I won't tell everybody how bad UA is... With every airline those things can happen (well broken PTVs won't happen on LH...).
The price you pay is for a seat that will carry you from one to another place and all the rest depends on the attitude you have when you enter the plane.
I would never want to fly with Air Whatever or so and if I would then they could do whatever they want and serve me with food on a golden plate and even give me my personal F/A for the whole flight... my mind would have been set already before I entered that plane. But if I would enter a plane of theirs without even having thought about how crubby the plane looks from the outside (man such a boring livery...) then I would definitly appreciate every little bit of extra service they give me.

Usa4624,
This is not going against you! You just wanted to have an objective view from the others which doesn'T look that objective....
Whatever you choose have a great flight!
And if it is possible then stay at FRA for a while as it is a great airport for spotting!

I don't care much about service to be honest, just give me an A340. The 777 is a nice plane but I prefer the A330/A340. Who cares about speed anyway? The 777 is probably about a mere 20 minutes faster than the A340: a non-issue.

MRTC is an invention by AA, it means: More Room Throughout Coach. American Airlines has removed some rows in the Economy Class to offer their passengers more legroom, it is no Economy Plus, just the regular Y-Class.

Both aircraft are fine, none is better than the other. I prefer Quads over Twins on long routes, so my choice is easy, especially as a LH frequent traveller I see absolutely nothing that would force me into AAs pretty777, not even the obviously more generous legroom. I´ve never flown with AAs 777, but on LHs A340 and it was excellent, service good and efficient, LH isn´t SIA or CX of cause. I´m fine with that. The A340 is so stress-free, smooth and quiet, no sqeeks, no rattles. I prefer actually the absence of raw power on take off on the A340 because that adds to the comfort aspect.

I have never flown AA's 777, but I have flown with LH A340's. I wasn't too impressed with LH's service. I found some of the attendants to be rude and arrogant. I the return leg with AC and found their service to be better and the leg room of their A340's much better. I'm not the biggest fan of the A340, but I have never flown a 777 before. Can't comment on AA longhaul.

I've flown AF across the pond, both in 777s and 777s, and their service sucks. I flew UA 77s from LA to CDG, and there service was on a par with that of AF. I flew a Virgin 744 from LAX-LHR in premium economy, and the seatpitch was comparable to that of AA's coach. I flew AA's 777s from LAX-LHR this summer (July4th and August 26) and there is NO scaled down service. The AA flights I flew were the best coach experiences I have ever had going from LA to Europe. Seat pitch was impressive to say the least, meals were good, far better then most other carriers. FAs were friendly, and I felt good knowing that I contributed to help the airline stay afloat by flying with them Big grin

-Clovis

Oh yeah, the 777 in AA colors is the most beautiful jet aircraft flying today in my opinion. The sliver bird never dissapoints.

Godbless,

I can certainly change my opinion on LH...as soon as LH starts to change. I will wait for their A340-600s...but I guess they will never reach Virgin Atlantic standards.

This one is easy and I've got the credentials to prove it Smile I hate domestic AA with a passion and you can search threads if you want to know more-But international is a different story and having flown AA and LH, there is no comparison-

This is one of the few times that I would ever have to recommend AA- They have much better service, food, all that you have read above. And if you decide to go LH to bag a 340, just be sure to be NICE to the FAs- They can move from dry efficiency to downright nasty in .34 seconds if you do anything that displeases them in anyway.

Have a great flight

...seems like a good idea to give longhaul markets a little kick in order to make flying comfortable for people bigger than 5 foot 3!

Well, my experience with LH is very small, only two flights, ARN-FRA and FRA-JFK, and the service was, as I wrote above, neither great nor bad, but, anyway, the F/As were quite friendly: on flight from ARN I was using my video camera and didn't hear as they told to turn off all personal electronic equipment; the F/A that asked me to do so did it very politely, with a smile... And after reading all the above posts I'm really intrigued to fly internationally with AA - so far I flew with them only domestically, and they are the only airline I have negative impression overall...
