Swiss And Oneworld: How's It Going?

Thu Oct 17, 2002 1:14 am

Hi

Was wondering what's up, with regards to the on-going talks between Swiss and Oneworld.........anyone have any news?

I know there were a few 'bumps' with respect to talks between Swiss and BA, any updates out there?

Some weeks ago there was a statement from André Dosé (CEO) that Swiss reached an agreement with all Oneworld-Airlines including BA. But since then I did not hear anything about it. ???

Attended a briefing by Swiss International Airlines in Bangkok yesterday, and it was mentioned that pending a few little issues with British Airways, Swiss will join Oneworld.

Also confirmed that the A340-300 will be deployed on the ZRH-BKK-SIN route in November 2003.

Aviasian,
Any idea what kind of issues? or was it a general statement using similar phrasing?

Andre Dose told some weeks ago, that there was an agreement between SWISS and BA. Dose told that BA is willing to accept SWISS to become a Oneworld-member without redimensioning its longhaul-fleet. But I never heard about Rod Eddingtons opinion about that. So I'm not sure if this agreement has really been set up without this long-haul-

For the moment SWISS maintains several codesharing-agreements with some oneworld-members (American, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Finnair) to approach the alliance. Some months ago Iberia entered the frequent-flyer programm of SWISS called "Qualiflyer". SWISS holds up a good relationship to most oneworld-members..But there are still lots of obstacles between SWISS and BA. Both airlines have a well-established Asia-network..and there are also the problems. BA is not willing to accept SWISS competing against it on these Asian routes.

My opinion is, that SWISS will become member of this alliance during next year. And they will have to redimension their fleet. SWISS will be perhaps the Africa-Specialist of the alliance (remember that SWISS hasa lot of destinations within the African continent). But on the other longhaul-routes the Swiss airline will have to cut down.

OW, that is indeed very interesting.

One part of me wonders how BA can put all these conditions on Swiss, the other part of me says perhaps they have good reason to negotiate carefully before welcoming Swiss into OW.

After all, Swiss is very new, and I suppose BA does not want to be associated with a high-profile repeat of what happened with Swissair....

Sure would be interesting to listen-in on their meetings!

As far as I know, the problem is not only between BA and LX. Iberia's CEO has also been quoted saying some rather sceptical things about LX in Oneworld, above all regarding LX's fleet size.

Last I heard, they were still negotiating with other OneWorld members about joining the alliance. I fully expect Swiss to join OneWorld.

Interesting! Therefore, I suppose that this will not be the first route on which the A340s are deployed as previously rumoured as the first comes in June. Does anyone now where Swiss plan to send their first A340s? Specifically, does anyone here now/has anyone here heard when they are supposed to start using them to LAX?

Yes, that's true. The Iberia management made some statements about the size of the longhaul fleet of SWISS. But I personally don't think that there are some obstacles in the partnership between Iberia and SWISS. This two airlines are NOT in a strong competitive situation on their longhaul-routes. SWISS is more Latin America-oriented, whereas SWISS maintains a well-established network to Asia, Africa and North America. So this two companies are less "substitutes" than "complements" to each other. Iberia is the market leader on routes between Europe and Latin America and SWISS is not a "danger" for Iberia's position.

But I heard sometimes members of the Iberia management comparing their longhaul-fleet with the Swiss one. And they always tell that they have a fleet matching the market demands, in contrast to SWISS!

I think SWISS and IBERIA partnership would be quite beneficial for both. SWISS's strong presence in Asia and Africa would be fine for IBERIA and IBERIA's leadership in South America would be quite adecuate for SWISS plans too.
Actually I think both companies would really benefit from a strong alliance like the KLM/NW, but there is somebody between them: BA. BA has a stake (about 9% or 10%) in IBERIA, and it has established codeshare flights for all those destinations where IBERIA doesn´t fly, mostly Asia and Australia. On the other hand, IBERIA shares its south american network with BA.
I can understand why BA is quite cautious about letting SWISS become a oneworld member, but I believe SWISS will eventually join the alliance
