Tonight On 60 Minutes - David Neeleman & JetBlue

Thu Oct 17, 2002 6:01 am

One of the segments on tonight's 60 Minutes reads "profiling an executive who is changing the airline industry" and from the footage in the promo, it looked like they were interviewing David Neeleman.

60 Minutes airs tonight on CBS (right before The Amazing Race, another good show for aviation enthusiasts) at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time, 7:00 p.m. Central, check your listings for other time zones.

I'm not sure if non US folks can watch it over the internet, but I did notice a link for "transcripts" on CBS's website, so a transcript of the show may be available later.

There is an overview of the story at:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/10/16/60II/main525810.shtml
Typically they place a more complete version of the story on the site within a few days.

CBS also sells videotapes of the stories.

ScottysAir, It depends on the area you are living in. Go to http://www.tvguide.com and search for it. Each area has a different channel assigned to CBS. In O.S., CBS is on channel 4. (It may be listed under your area's local broadcaster.)

Whoa Scott, Remember that Channel 4 is for me only. If you want to watch it, you have to go to CHANNEL 3. Channel 3 is WFOR which is your local broadcasting station. CHANNEL 3 will be what you will need to watch.

Just saw it and thought that 60 Minutes did a pretty good job of profiling the airline. Although they did forget to mention JetBlue's reservation agents working from home as another way to cut down costs. Otherwise, it was an excellent report.

Pretty interesting, is his salary of $200k a year somewhat low?

BR715-A1-30,

I did it watch with 60 Minutes on the channels 4 as for myself by 10 mins ago as for myself and it was very interesting story about of David Neeleman about with Jetblue. So he was former use with Morris Air and after that it been sold to Southwest Airlines. And he didn't not get it with the job at SWA.  Sad And that was base into SLC as for last time. And he did very friendly with the customers at the airplaanes, airport workers there, too. They were interview with Dan Rather by the t.v. about with Jetblue see how is they were growth as for right now into the West Coast. I'm sure that will be great to added with 5 Airbus A320 more expands to Florida cities. So this is it as for right now. Well, later!!

All I can say is that this story on David Neeleman and jetBlue was an eye opener for me! I have been in the biz for 18 years and recently furloughed from a major airline, and it just makes me want to work for this airline even MORE! Very IMPRESSIVE!

I saw the whole program. WONDERFUL!!!!! I liked how David Neeleman was sitting in the cargo bin chatting with the ramp workers. I also liked how he was playing Basketball with the workers. David Neeleman is a great dude. I can't wait to fly jetBlue.

He was on CNN a few months ago too. I think it was either CNN Presents or People in the news.

The CEO of Jet Blue Airways is trulely one of the best CEO's out there!

United777, Yes he was on CNN in August. I watched that one too. You are right. He is truely one of the best (if not the best) CEOs out there. We owe that partly to his A.D.D. which adds to his creativity, (or so he says)

John,

I completely agree. I'm not employed in the airline industry (YET), but in the future, JB will definitely be on my wishlist. Glad to see CBS give a nice piece of primetime publicity to such a great airline. I really enjoyed the bit and it was nice noting that during the entire segment, there was never an unhappy employee nor passenger. That says a lot for JB. David Neeleman really knows how to run an airline by the looks of things. I'd love working under such a motivated CEO. Great team atmosphere that JB has, never thought I'd see A320 pilots cleaning up after their passengers deplaned. WoW. Great job David Neeleman and JB. Keep up the great work!!!!

Jetblue has started with a lot more money and with brand new planes.

Some other comments,
He didn't seem to like pilots with guns, the video screens and the cockpit doors would be hard to break through. Took me a while to find it, so I missed the first part.

Sadly it did not air here in Houston. The local, yokel CBS affiliate KHOU 11 decided to put on a locally produced program concerning juvenile offenders  Angry. Suffice to say I was totally pissed off, so much so that I shot off a angry e-mail to KHOU. Angry  Angry

I was really looking foward to this. What few snippets I saw reminded me of a report that 60 minutes did several years back when they profiled Unkie Herb of WN. One scene that was similar to the Kelleher profile (actually for almost a second I thought it was a repeat of the Keller interview) and the Neeleman interview was that 60 minutes taped both CEOs passing out packets of peanuts, conversing with passangers, ect.... on their respective carriers. I was really hoping to see the comparisions and contrasts between Kellher and Neeleman.

Well, as a Latter-day Saint, you won't find Mr. Neeleman consuming cigarettes and Wild Turkey....  Big grin

One thing that especially impressed me about Neeleman was that (I read) he decided not to avail himself of about $20,000,000 in compensation/options he was entitled to for concern of how it would look. Obviously, he's still doing well, but passing on $20M for the reason(s) he stated are quite an indication of character.

Saw it here in Trinidad/Caribbean.

I have to admit, I am impressed by the man and by the airline.
I hope other airlines follow his standard of being a "people person", because at the end of the day, integrity is what matters.

Clipper,
I wouldn't sweat it when he (David Neeleman) was playing basketball with his employees outside on the ramp.. He wants all the employees to have fun. They work hard and they play. When they have 'down time' they can do those things.. Foosball anyone?
