After about 20 years of service, Air Midwest is ending service from Wichita to Kansas City effective November 3.

Given the state of security clearance times and the unsuitablility of MCI as a connecting terminal, this doesn't surprise me. Lots of travellers have taken to their cars to drive to MCI for low fares. Plus AirTran and Frontier are offering lower fares directly out of ICT now.

Also, considering the last time I looked at the fares, it was $218 round trip to fly ICT-MCI on Air Midwest it's not really surprising.
I doubt many people still go to Kansas City to fly anymore. I have used Kansas City twice after our low fare service because of a lack of good connections from Wichita for a longhaul trip and because Nashville doesn't have low fares from Wichita while Kansas City had a dirt cheap nonstop flight.

The Kansas City airport is a solid 30 minutes + north of downtown by car. Anyone who flys from ICT to MCI has got to be connecting onto mainline US Airways. If they're just going to KC they are nuts!

Oh, and everyone knows the KC airport isn't great for connections, but the O&D numbers for that airport are in the high 90%'s so no one gives a crap. And anyway, I could go to Home Depot and buy an aluminum shed and I think it would be ok for the 19 people stepping off the Beechcraft 1900D to make their connections - I don't think the terminal building at MCI was a factor.

Mls515,

Make sure it's one of those TuffSheds. Those are nice.  Smile

Frontier JetExpress will be increasing ICT service soon.

Yes, BA, Frontier will expand service here already. I haven't heard much about them regarding how their loads are and how they're doing. I assume well?
There wasn't a lot of connecting traffic on US Airways anyway. If you were going somewhere from Wichita besides a US Airways hub or Kansas City, it would require two stops at the same price as the other airlines which offer 1 stop.

WOW, if this is the case now, you would have to think that MCI-OMA & DSM might be in danger of being discontinued.

And if more people are driving than flying now the MCI-FOE,LNK,MHK runs could be dropped.

All in all it seems like the US Airways express operation is getting kinda small.

What really surprises me about them dropping ICT is that this used to be thier headquaters (AirMidWest) and a very well traveled route. It was probably thier most well traveled after MCI-OMA.

Kinda sad!

Are they connecting with MidWest Airlines yet?

By Midwest Airlines, I assume you mean Midwest Express? The Air Midwest/US Airways Express flight from Kansas City to Wichita was a code-share with Midwest Express.
I think they moved the maintenence station here to Little Rock. I belieive the staff here won't be cut since Air Midwest is owned by Mesa, who also flies to Frontier JetExpress flight to Denver.
