Concorde Service To BGI...SJU?

Thu Oct 17, 2002 2:50 pm

What are the loads like on BA's seasonal Concorde service to Barbados? I was also toying with the idea of BA starting winter weekend service Concorde service to San Juan, Puerto Rico. San Juan is a great city with some pretty expensive hotels which attract some pretty wealthy clientale. Plus it would make for some great spotting!! What you guys think?

BA LHR-BGI services resume 30th November, and it's just to BGI and back as its a mature Concorde market, no other services are being planned as the focus is totally on maximizing profitability in difficult times for BA.
Some flights for the season to April on this service are already very full, as its become a regular thing for many of the pax.
There is (and had always been) a restriction of 80 pax on these services, they are at a longer range and being a vacation destination have a lot more baggage than a JFK service.
Though the max. range of the aircraft appears to be uncomfortably close to BGI's distance from LHR, the cooler atmospheric conditions in the equatorial regions at 58,000 ft increase engine efficiency, I've not got the figures for BGI but on the BAH-SIN sector in the late 70's it increased range by some 250 miles.

How is the yield on the LHR-BGI route compared to LHR-JFK?

The yield is better on the LHR-JFK but that is because it is a daily service (except for Saturdays at certain times of the year) and BGI is a once a week seasonal service. Before the AF crash the idea was to use the Concorde on Saturdays on an non business route to generate revenue instead of flying a half or even one-third full BA003/BA004.

At one time three years ago there was a JFK-BGI service using Concorde...

Actually the average traveler to Puerto Rico isnt even close in income to a traveler to Barbados, St. Maarten, or Antigua. Although it is a pretty nice place, P.R. can be pretty seedy in some spots. A lot of the tourist revenue is from middle-class travelers looking for an inexpensive Caribbean trip, the same can be said about Jamaica...although they both have great natural beauty. I dont think that European, especially British travelers would even compare PR to Barbados. The Leeward and Windward Islands both have a distinctive European flavor, while PR is more Spanish and American, it reminds me of Miami in a lot of respects.

While I've not got the BGI yield figures to hand, the airline always speaks very highly of the supersonic BGI services profitability.
Like the JFK services, a standby aircraft for each LHR-BGI service is required, unlike the charters that we used to run.
In other words, these are very valuable customers, any potential delays must be minimised.

Jcs17 I don't know how you can call San Juan a "middle-class" destination especially when avg. hotel prices can range $350 and please let's not compare a third world country like Jamaica to Puerto RIco...There is a huge difference.

Absolutely have to agree with you Tu144d, the two islands have nothing in common. I have spent lots and lots of time in PR and in Jamaica. PR wins hands down. Some fantastic hotels, bars, restaurants and great buildings. Love the place and miss it loads.

However, "BA/CKT/AML" used to fly DC10's then 777's into SJU (usually with me onboard!) and about 90% of the pax were connecting to cruise ships, very few actually stayed in PR, so not too sure if the Concorde service could be supported.

Puerto Rico is the most modern and sophisticated island in the Caribbean. It has the best business and medical facilities and the highest standard of living. Please do not compare other third world islands to this jewel. All countries have questionable neighbourhoods more so places like the Eastern Caribbean Islands.

Puerto Rico is one of the most expensive destinations in the Caribbean, that is why Puerto Rico looses alot of its tourism to other islands like The Dominican Republic,Cuba, Jamaica , The Bahamas and The Mexican Caribbean (mainly Cancun). Im sure the island would attract more visitors if it was promoted more in Europea and South America(but the tourism board just bothers to promote in The USA). With the top notch hotels currently in the island and some advertising -Puerto Rico has the potential to be a preferred destination for European tourists.
BA is currently considering returning to SJU- this was reported by El Nuevo Dia a week or two ago.

The thing with SJU is that it is not a very large tourist market from the EU, from where Concorde pax originate. Its higher costs compared to Cuba, the D.R. and others put it at a major disadvantage. It also needs to be remembered that a very large percentage of pax into SJU overall is VFR which is not very high-yield while much of the remainder comprises US tourists who do not have to bother about immigration, visas and foreign exchange to visit P.R., thus securing that market despite the high prices. What P.R. gets most EU visitors for is the cruise ship business - and the pax flying for those are generally not the highest-yielding ones. As such SJU may regain BA or other EU charter service (along with the current AF and heritage IB services) but certainly not Concorde.

BGI has a dedicated upper-crust market who frequent the island's top-notch hotels like Sandy Lane on the West Coast as well as those who hop over to millionaires' hideaway Mustique nearby. It is those pax, including some very rich and famous, who use the Concorde services.

Hop to it, fly for life!

Tritocan - Air France does not fly to San Juan (they discontinued the route long time ago)
The only nonstops to Europe at the moment are Iberia's Madrid flight and Condor's Saturday FRA flight.
