Southwest Plans BWI Expansion Incl. New Transcon

Thu Oct 17, 2002 9:05 pm

Southwest announced today that it will expand during fourth quarter 2002 and first quarter 2003. Inaddition to introducing new nonstop service between Baltimore/Washington and San Jose, Southwest will add additional frequencies between Baltimore/Washington and Orlando, Birmingham, Fort Lauderdale, Manchester, Hartford, and Tampa.

Southwest is also accelerating delivery of 73G aircraft to take additional frames by the end of this year and more in 2003. From PRNewswire:

"As we continue to cautiously resume our growth plans, we have
accelerated delivery of one 2003 and two 2004 Boeing 737-700 aircraft to
fourth quarter 2002. We have also exercised two future options for
accelerated delivery to fourth quarter 2002 and four future options for
accelerated delivery to 2003. These changes bring our total planned
deliveries for 2002 to 23; 2003 to 17; and future commitments, including
options and purchase rights, to 396 aircraft for 2004 through 2012."

Hello,

Interestingly, what was a clear distinction for Southwest Airlines -- and other low-cost carrier -- is now disappearing: flying short-haul routes exclusively.

What transcons are they currently operating? With 737-700s I guess?

Thus far, the only other true transcon that I'm aware of is BWI-LAX. And yes, these routes are flown with 737-700s.

Also, there is as for long transcon nonstop from PVD-PHX flight, too. So that is for the longest nonstop from PVD-PHX flight and also that is more than as for the flight out of LAS flight to the east coast. So hope this is your helps. Thanks!!!

You know what's real bad? Only 1 BWI-MSY nonstop. How sad is that? Metrojet's two dailies were oversold on a consistent basis. Now there's only 1 flight in the market, where there could easily be 3 or 4. Real poor.

Looking at the schedules for early April Flight 404 will depart SJC at 7:40 a.m. and arrive BWI at 3:40 p.m. Flight 1067 will depart 7:35 p.m. and arrive SJC at 11:05 p.m.

Looking at the schedules for the other cities listed (and ISP, which wasn't mentioned in the press release):

BHM gets 1 new nonstop for a total of 4

FLL gets one new nonstop for a total of 4

MHT get one new nonstop for a total of 10

BDL gets one new nonstop for a total of 9

TPA gets one new nonstop for a total of 5

ISP gets one new nonstop for a total of 9

MCO gets 4(!) new nonstops for a total of 9

Actually, BDL-LAS on Southwest is the longest flight in the SW market behind BWI-LAX. It beats out PVD-PHX non stop.

BDL-LAS 1996
PVD-PHX 1978

Afitch7881,

This is correct one as for the nonstop from the east coast to the west for bound LAS, PHX, and LAX, too. That is Transcontinental with the longest flight by nonstop. And if they are getting more extra meals by the snacks and get buy something at the store to take it with your chips, pretzels and etc to do. MHT-LAS/PHX will be later on as for near of the future by nonstop and when is runway is complete with 9,000 feets there. So that is it as for right now. See ya!!

Regards,

Scott W.

I'm surprised there's only one more BWI-BDL flight. Every flight on this routing is always completely packed, and the Metrojet planes were also when they flew it, which made a total of 12 packed flights a day.

I think once Southwest gets the third gate they want at BDL they can expand more out to the west and to the south. BWI I could see going to 11-12 daily flights in the future with more service to FL.

Interesting (to me anyway) that they chose San Jose for the first Bay Area nonstop and not Oakland.

I think they are trying to cash in on the fact that there are many many South Bay and SF passengers going to the Washington D.C. area. They are challenging United's monopoly on the market, which entails a very large volume of passengers everyday.

Here's the URL:

The info about BWI expansion is buried pretty deeply below all the info about the quarter's financials.
