Ryanair Voted Worst Airline In Europe

Fri Oct 18, 2002 1:15 am

I couldnt resist sharing this one with you all  Big grin ..........

Ryanair has been voted the worst airline in Europe for 2002, in a poll conducted by Skytrax, the independent airline consultants.

The Irish no-frills carrier got over half the votes (56 per cent) in the survey of almost 10,000 flyers.

Olympic Airways of Greece was voted second worst with six per cent of the votes.

'Two fingers'

Skytrax said: "Ryanair's chief executive Michael O'Leary is well known for his habit of pointing the proverbial 'two fingers' whenever the subject of dissatisfied customers or debatable practices are discussed.

"The airline carried over 6 million customers, so we accept our poll of passenger 'dissatisfaction' reflects just a small percentage of the total.

"However surely it is time to sit up, listen and address the customer issues that Ryanair refer to as 'less important aspects of service'."

Passenger Charter

Ryanair has refused to sign Europe's 'Airline Passenger Service Commitment' but has implemented its own charter claiming that its "pricing, punctuality and service commitment is far superior to that of other airlines in Europe".

The Skytrax Poll was carried out between August 21 and October 7.

Dont tell me the "can do no wrong" LCC's are losing their lustre?  Big grin

You can probably alienate your customers as long as there is no viable alternative for them. FR has enjoyed a PR advantage as Europe's only important low cost carrier for many years during the 90's. For this time, they were able to capitalize from a seemingly endless supply of customers gouged by higher fares (albeit in conjunction with more service options) of "conventional" carriers.

This situation has started to change in recent times. With more-service oriented competitors like Easyjet, Virgin Express and, in the future, possibly also airlines like mytravel lite, germanwings and Hapag lloyd Express growing in size and importance, it will become vital to improve customer relations. Like Gordon Bethune once said: "you can make a pizza so cheap no one wants to buy it." Why should I fly between tertiary airports on often delayed planes and endure, as it seems, quite frequently non-existant service if a better and more convenient alternative is only a few Pounds/Euros more expensive?

I wonder how long it will take for Ryanair until they are start to feel the financial effects of the bad publicity they are getting now...

Oh please whatever.

So SKytrax got tired of the "best" in the airline industry and decided to have a go at the "worst" instead?

Maybe they could also brush up on their internet literacy.

Ryanair will hardly lose sleep over this

When will anyone ever learn that all Ryanair get out of this is more FREE publicity. They will just love this...

O'Leary is right IMO, they have very few complaints in comparison to the number of passengers carried each year. Have travelled myself on Ryanair several times, and always experienced very efficient and excellent value trips.

I would like to know which kind of questions SKYTRAX asked in its poll.

Cause if they ask only about onboard and costumers service quality to 10,000 business flyers, it's very easy to find that FR is the "worst" European carriers.

But over 10m flyers like them for their very low fares.

I guess it all depends on what the truth is, and Skytrax may or may not reflect the truth of what the majority of pax think about Ryanair.

All I can say is that if the complaints are indeed well-founded, Ryanair will, eventually, begin to suffer the consequences.

Personally, having flown FR many times now, I certainly wouldn't place them at the top of the 'worst' list. Speaking honestly, I really haven't had bad service on any of my flights. Perhaps I was just lucky?!

I really do think Ryanair ought to pull their shoes up - they specialise in poor routings which are not suited to the more lucrative market. Look at the airports they use - miles from a city - and then compare that with other LoCos such as easyjet, go, VEX, and the new boys. They advertise very low headline fares but then you have to pay the taxes which takes their fares up the level of the others.
I looked at flying London-Glasgow, and even checked out STN-DUB (£4.99) with DUB-PIK (€12.99) which sold awfully cheap, but once I added on the taxes it was clearly cheaper for me to fly bmi british midland. So I'm flying bmi which has additional advantages such as a complimentary meal, as well as the more convenient (time and cost-wise) location (for me) of Heathrow.
And Prestwick and Glasgow Int'l are equidistant to my eventual destination in North Ayrshire, so there' no competition!

True, Ryanair used to be good for cheapies, but now there are more players who are sharper and Mr O'Leary just seems to think that many of his potential customers don't look beyond the headlines.

On closer inspection, I'm not convinced of this website's credibility after having read this editorial http://www.airlinequality.com/news/news_extra/edit_low_ryan.htm

Ryanair are not of course perfect, but even from an objective viewpoint (if it is possible for one to be objective), it is pretty clear that the editor is trying his damnest to slam the airline to the ground (fair enough, everyone has an opinion, but on who's behalf is he writing-his, or many travellers?)

They don't want to publish their client database online, claiming 'those in the airline industry probably know about us already'.........hmmm

And there's no information on the voters.......

Difficult to take seriously......just who does Skytrax really represent? I would love to know......you know, there was once a 'dirty tricks' department run by a certain airline....

Go on, shoot me, but some questions must be raised before accepting this 'poll' at face-value....

I'm not trying to defend the airline in any way, but I will freely admit that I am somewhat sceptical about these results....it really smells quite strongly of another attempt at a smearing campaign.

The VW Polo is the most lausy car, 56% of 10,000 Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Cadilac drivers voted. And so what???

BTW, just today I discovered that a not unimportant part of my retirement funds are invested in Ryanair. At least far more than what is invested in other airlines combined. Should I be worried for my future?

I think that I would be much more worried if that money had been invested in some major US or European carrier. After all Ryanair grows and pays profit to the shareholders. Not all that common in that business today.

Free seat giveaways and other mass publicity do not conceal the fact that you simply cannot give away airline seats for nothing and expect to turn a profit
No shit Sherlock-they implement yield management well.
One of the things about FR that sticks in the forefront of my mind is paying $30 for a walk-up fare at CRL after missing my flight that evening. Not bad for a morning flight to STN at all SmileI have flown FR many times now and have no complaints at all about them!

Europe should institute the same advertising policies as those recently adopted here in Australia. All airline pricing advertisements must include the price including taxes. Previously a headline ad of MEL-SYD-MEL of AUD149 was shown only to work out to being over AUD200 when the taxes shown in the fine print were included. Such practices are now illegal.

Well, Denmark is part of Europe, and it has always been the law here.

There is no special law about airline ticket taxes, but the old general law, which prohibits misleading marketing, has always been interpreted the way that if a "partial price" is mentioned, then the full price must always appear as prominent as the partial price.

And Ryanair of course obeys to the law here in Denmark.

I don't know how many countries have the same law, and how many have to tighten up. But Denmark is certainly not alone.

Ryanair is a no-frills carrier... so what does one expect? I am surprised this topic even came up! The fact that Ryanair was even polled against Olympic seems ludicruous to me. OA is an international full service carrier whereas Ryanair isn't.

So really, OA should be the worst airline, no?

Isn't having the 'worst airline' category a little bit childish anyway?

Do any serious awarding bodies have such a cetgory for airlines? i.e. OAG, Airline Business, Business Traveller.........answer = No.

Read the editorial again. I am more than certain 'Skytrax' is run by someone/something/some airline with something to lose from Ryanair....notice how it criticises all low-cost airlines in Britain (not just Ryanair), then goes on to blatantly praise British Airways and encourage cosumers to 'invest wisely' and fly only with a full-service carrier. No impartiality whatsoever.......a mickey-mouse survey in all respects.....and I do agree that BA are a good airline, and I fly them a lot, but I sometimes wonder what some of their people get up to.

Oh God, here I go posting again, trying to defend Ryanair to the death............
Contrary to what may seem obvious, I don't want to defend low-cost airlines against every criticism, since some of it is surely justified......I just have a major interest in this sector of the airline industry, hence my constant presence on Ryanair/Easy/VEX threads.....I hope you don't mind or get tired of my shouting at everyone.....  Big grin

But I do offer this article, I think it might interest everyone, whether you fly low-cost airlines, or avoid them like the plague  Big grin after all, we all have different expectations.........and budgets!  Big thumbs up

For the record... I do not now, nor have I ever trusted Skyrax as independant or credible because they are hired by SSPECIFIC airlines (who all are 5 stars with them) to be their conultants.

I've not seen it yet myself, but has anyone seen the new TV adverts in the UK for BA-apparently taking the gloves off (at long last) to the LCC's.

Clearly, the editor of Skytrax has no idea what the Ryanair business model is. They make most of their money not from selling seats, but rather from inflight sales and commissions on hotel and car rental bookings. Indeed, Michael O'Learly is on the record as saying that he would be happy to fly his punters for free!

At the end of the day, though, you get what you pay for. The LCCs are in the same business as train and bus operators - try getting accommodation (or compensation) out of Stagecoach if you miss your bus!  Big grin

Seems like a resolute no-no to this latest editorial.

Anzett, I know you are watching. However, your e-mails to Skytrax imitating me are going to fail and you are too silly to know it. Skytrax likes what "you're" saying and they will accept it point blank. However, I can just sit back and think of what a miserable male/female/alien you are! Mooohahah to that.
