Mexican Airports

I was recently watching a show and saw the check-in view of a Mexican airport, it was cancun and then i think there was also a Mexico City one. Well anyway i am so used to thinking that they would be run down dirty places with a lack of security, but it wasnt! It was extreamly nice! It was as nice as any US airport and the people working the check in booths were also very clean and friendly! So i feel bad know for being stero typical but it also sparked my curiosity to find out more about other Mexican and South American airports. So what are they like, please compare them to ones in the US if you like! Just tell about them and so on, nothing is trash to me wether youve got a lot or a little go ahead and tell!

Some airports are similar than those in the US (in services but not in size). Largest airports in Mexico are MEX, CUN, GDL, TIJ and MTY handling 22M, 7M, 5M, 3M and 3M respectevily... Just to give you and idea, SLC handles 25M

Those five airports are nice... My favourite is MTY due to its art gallery in the tunnel linking main terminal with the final boarding gates. GDL is under major works to improve it and TIJ is like a mega bus station.

There are a lot of smaller airports, most of them still owned by the government. You can take a look to their photos at Some of them are like those crap airports you imagined, especially Cuernavaca (CVJ) home base for Aerolineas Internacionales.

TIJ is in need of modernization, and is probably too small to handle the amount of traffic they handle (which is the same situation we face jsut across the border in San Diego.)

The contrast between airports in the US and Mexico can be interesting. On some levels they are the same, security, ticketing, staff, shops. Other than the language it is the same. But then you are reminded that you are in a poor nation. Watching people go by with luggage that is literally a cardboard box tied with string....

TIJ as a city is a dump in my opinion. It is a boom town that has sucked up much of the garbage of Mexico. But get south of the border and you find a beautiful country with great people. (Yes, I track there.)

Having visited many Mexican airports I have yet to find any that is dirty or run down. I don't know Tijuana, but "exotic" places(to foreigners) like Puerto Escondido(PXM) or Zacatecas(ZCL) are more than OK, not to mention big cities. Most Mexican airports were built en masse by a government agency named Airports and Auxiliary Services (known as ASA in Mexico). They did a good job building airports for resorts and medium to small cities in the 70s and 80s with nice terminal buildings, control towers, fuel supplies and firefighting station. We ought most of our airport infrastructure to that effort.

Umm, I wass recently in Cancun...

I liked it better that JFK because it was more fun. The people were nicer. It was cleaer. They were giving out free teqilla shots and mexican flags. The waiting area was under construction, but so is JFK. I love JFK, but they could learn a lot from Cancun. Then again, CUN is made for tourists... JFK is not.

I was also in MEX and HUX a while back Don't remember HUX at all, but MEX was rather modern.

I don't know why you would think Mexican airports are rundown. Most airports that have comercial flights are nice looking.

I learned a lot in Mexico. I'ts not the US at all (duh!!)... but I really liked it and the people. I am planning on returning. Very soon if somebody's invitation still stands...  Big grin

Hey PZurita !

You know it's a funny thing.... Today while walking around the airport I thought to myself, hmmmm this place looks like a big bus station that's sorta fancy when it's not crowded. So I guess TIJ does indeed look like a big bus station ; ) They're currently doing lots of renovations, building a new wing and also there are improvements underway on the ramp which is being expanded to accommodate more planes (it was urgently overdue). Let's hope that it starts looking more decent soon.

You have to look at the positive side of things, working at a small and crowded airport can be great, I can be working the check in counters one minute, and the next minute I can take a quick walk down the ramp (which is exhilarating, walking among all the airplane traffic, watching and hearing all the sights and sounds, it's absolutley intoxicating !!!!) and do work at the boarding gates. It's really fun !

Oh poppycock, why is it that Tijuana always gets called a dump? sure it may not win the prize of most beautiful city in the country, but it's not THAT bad, it's not Mogadishu or anything like that, let's not forget that this is one of the places with lowest unemployment in the country and that has given opportunity to many people that left the "beautiful and exotic" countryside down south to build new lives. Of course, when you're next to San Diego, of course we're gonna look like a dump ! But lemme tell ya, I'm glad I was born here ! sorry, off topic ; )

I have been in Mexican Airports like Matamoros (MAM) and Reynosa (REX) that can be called dumps... last year, I experienced a delay in MAM due to heavy fog, and the airport didn't have one store to buy water or food... AM staff went to the nearest supermarket to buy juice, water and milk for the 4:30 hours delay. The bathrooms didn't work well, so you can imagine the picture...
The only good thing was that the observation deck was opened, so you could hear the MD88 engines "roar" for many times... the AM pilot made 5 attempts to get the airplane into the runway, and finally made it...
